Overview

Upper Mustang is one of Nepal’s most unique trekking regions – a high, arid landscape in the rain shadow of the Himalaya with a strong Tibetan cultural identity, ancient trade-route villages, and dramatic eroded cliffs. This itinerary starts with Kathmandu support and a smooth transition to Pokhara, then flies into Jomsom and travels into Mustang’s desert-like terrain to reach Lo Manthang, the historic walled capital of the former Kingdom of Lo.

You spend meaningful time in Lo Manthang to explore its major monasteries and then visit the Chosar Valley, known for sky caves and cave monasteries. The trek then continues east toward Yara for visits to the remarkable cliffside Luri Gompa and the Tashi Kabum cave site before heading to Charang and driving back to Jomsom for flights out via Pokhara.

Highlights

  1. Fly into Jomsom and enter the dramatic Kali Gandaki corridor – the gateway to Mustang
  2. Trek in the Trans-Himalayan rain-shadow landscape of cliffs, canyons, and high desert scenery
  3. Reach Lo Manthang (about 3,810m) – the historic walled capital of Upper Mustang
  4. Explore Lo Manthang’s major monasteries – Jampa Lhakhang, Thubchen, and Choede

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m

Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH). This day is kept light so you can rest, hydrate, and recover from travel. If you arrive early, you can do a short walk nearby and pick up any last-minute essentials. In the evening, we keep things calm so you start the trip feeling fresh and well-rested.

Day 2Kathmandu | Optional World Heritage SightseeingOvernight: 1350 m

This is your preparation day in Kathmandu and it can also be used for Optional World Heritage Sightseeing. You can use the time for a trip briefing, checking layers for windy Mustang conditions, and final packing. If you want sightseeing, this day fits perfectly because you have energy before the travel stage begins. A relaxed evening helps a lot before the flight/drive to Pokhara.

Day 3Travel to PokharaOvernight: 815 m

Travel to Pokhara by flight or road depending on your preference and schedule. Flying is quicker, while driving gives a wider sense of Nepal’s countryside and river valleys. After arrival, the lakeside atmosphere is ideal for slowing down before the Mustang section begins. It is best to rest well tonight because the next day includes flights and a higher, drier environment.

Day 4Fly to Jomsom, drive to TetangOvernight: 2980 m

You take a morning flight to Jomsom (weather dependent in the mountains), then continue by vehicle into the Mustang landscape. The terrain quickly shifts into the Kali Gandaki’s wind-sculpted, arid environment with dramatic cliffs and open skies. Tetang is a traditional Mustang village used as a comfortable starting point before you begin trekking northward. The evening is a good time to settle into the high-desert climate and keep hydration steady.

Day 5Trek to SyangbocheOvernight: 3780 m

Today you begin trekking into Upper Mustang’s classic trail atmosphere - wide valleys, chortens, mani walls, and that distinct Trans-Himalayan “high plateau” feel. The landscape is often dry and open, and the wind can pick up later in the day, so an early, steady pace is ideal. As you gain altitude, the scenery becomes more rugged and expansive with big canyon views. Syangboche is a quiet overnight stop that feels noticeably more remote than the lower Mustang corridor.

Day 6Trek to DakmarOvernight: 3800 m

The trail continues through Mustang’s eroded red and ochre landscapes, with a strong sense of moving deeper into the old Kingdom of Lo. This area is especially known for striking cliffs and a very “high desert” atmosphere. Dakmar is often referenced as being around 3,800m, and the setting is memorable for its dramatic terrain and cultural markers along the route. After arrival, it’s a great evening to slow down, enjoy the quiet, and prepare for the approach to Lo Manthang.

Day 7Trek to Lo ManthangOvernight: 3810 m

Today you reach Lo Manthang, the historic walled capital of Upper Mustang. Many trekkers feel a real shift on this day - the landscape opens and the cultural atmosphere becomes more “kingdom-like” as you approach the old city. Lo Manthang is widely cited around 3,810m, and the town is known for its walls, palace history, and remarkable monasteries. You arrive with time to settle in and enjoy the feeling of being in one of Nepal’s most unique cultural destinations.

Day 8Lo Manthang monastery exploration dayOvernight: 3810 m

A full day to explore Lo Manthang properly, without rushing. The main focus is visiting the major monasteries in and around the walled city - commonly highlighted as Jampa Lhakhang, Thubchen Monastery, and Choede Monastery. You will also have time to walk the lanes of the old settlement and experience the unique architecture and daily life rhythm. This is one of the most culturally rich days of the trek, so keeping the pace relaxed makes it far more rewarding.

Day 9Lo Manthang Chosar Valley exploration dayOvernight: 3810 m

Today you explore the Chosar (Chhoser) Valley area, one of the most fascinating side trips from Lo Manthang. This area is known for sky caves and cave monasteries, including the Jhong caves and nearby cave gompas that some travel accounts note as Lo-Nyphu and Lo-Gharphu. The day gives a deeper sense of Mustang’s cliffside cave culture and the region’s long history of settlement and spiritual practice. You return to Lo Manthang for another comfortable night inside this unique high-desert capital.

Day 10Trek to YaraOvernight: 3650 m

You leave Lo Manthang and head toward the quieter eastern side of the region, where the landscape becomes more rugged and canyon-like in places. The trail often feels less travelled compared to the main approach route, which adds to the sense of discovery. Yara is commonly cited around 3,650m and is known for its stark surroundings and traditional village atmosphere. Arriving here sets you up perfectly for the cave monastery visits the next day.

Day 11Yara Luri Gompa and Tashi Kabum exploration dayOvernight: 3650 m

This is a highlight day for Mustang’s cave heritage and spiritual sites. You visit Luri Gompa, a famous cliffside cave monastery in the Yara area, often described around 3,900m and set dramatically into steep rock cliffs. You also visit the Tashi Kabum cave site, which is commonly described as about an hour’s walk from Yara and known for its cave-temple setting. The day is usually planned with enough time to move slowly and safely on the narrow paths around these sites, then return to Yara for a restful night.

Day 12Trek to CharangOvernight: 3570 m

Today you trek toward Charang (also spelled Tsarang), one of Upper Mustang’s most important historic settlements. Charang is known for its large monastery complex and its old palace setting, and it is widely cited around 3,570m. The trail keeps the classic Mustang mood - open horizons, dry cliffs, and strong Tibetan cultural markers along the way. After arrival, you have time to settle in and enjoy the quieter, historic atmosphere of the village.

Day 13Drive to JomsomOvernight: 2735 m

You transition from trekking back to vehicle travel and drive south toward Jomsom through the Kali Gandaki corridor. The landscape gradually shifts from Upper Mustang’s high-desert villages to the more connected Lower Mustang trailhead environment. This is a comfortable logistics day that helps keep the end of the trip smooth. In Jomsom, you can rest well and prepare for the flights out the next morning.

Day 14Fly to Pokhara Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m

You fly from Jomsom to Pokhara (weather dependent) and then connect onward to Kathmandu. After days in the dry, windy Mustang landscape, Kathmandu comfort feels like a real reward. We transfer you to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH), where you can enjoy a long shower and a relaxed evening. This is also a great night for a celebratory dinner and easy packing.

Day 15Depart | Transfer to TIA

We transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) for your flight home. If your flight is later in the day, you can still enjoy a relaxed breakfast and final time in Kathmandu before the airport run.
