Overview
This is an overland jeep safari into Upper Mustang, designed for travelers who want the cultural depth of the Lo Kingdom without long trekking days. After flying to Pokhara and driving up the Kali Gandaki corridor, you enter the restricted region at Kagbeni and continue by 4WD through dramatic desert landscapes, wind-carved cliffs, and centuries-old villages that feel closer to Tibet than the rest of Nepal. You stay in traditional lodges and make short walks to the most important sites – monasteries, cave sanctuaries, and historic villages – while your jeep handles the rugged distance.
The journey is paced to give you real time in Lo Manthang and the Chhoser area for sky caves, then continues east to Yara for the famous cave monastery experiences at Tashi Kabum and Luri Gompa. On the way back, you visit sacred Muktinath (3,800m) before returning to Pokhara and flying to Kathmandu for a relaxed finish.

Itinerary
Day 1Arrive in Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m
Arrive in Kathmandu and we transfer you to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH). This day is kept easy so you can rest after your journey and settle in comfortably. If you arrive early, you can take a gentle walk around the city core and prepare anything you want for the trip, like power banks, sunglasses, or a neck buff for Mustang dust. In the evening, we review the safari flow, road style, and comfort expectations so the next days feel smooth.
Day 2Kathmandu | Optional World Heritage SightseeingOvernight: 1350 m
This is your second day in Kathmandu, so it can be used for Optional World Heritage Sightseeing. It is also a good day for a calm briefing, confirming domestic flight details, and making sure you have comfortable layers for warm valleys and cold high-desert nights. If you prefer to rest, Kathmandu is perfect for a slow café day and early sleep. We keep the day flexible so you start the journey fresh.
Day 3Fly to Pokhara | Transfer to Hotel BarahiOvernight: 815 m
Fly to Pokhara and transfer to Hotel Barahi in Lakeside. Pokhara is the perfect staging city for Mustang because you can relax by the lake, enjoy good food, and reset before the overland drive begins. Depending on arrival time, you can do a short lakeside walk or simply rest at the hotel. We recommend an early night because the next day is a long but scenic mountain drive.
Day 4Drive to Kalopani | Sarangkot viewpoint, Tatopani hot spring stopOvernight: 2530 m
If you want, the morning can start with a quick Sarangkot viewpoint visit above Pokhara for sunrise-style mountain scenery in clear weather.
Then you drive north following the route toward the Kali Gandaki corridor, with scenery shifting from green hills into deeper river valleys and mountain landscapes. A classic stop is Tatopani, known for natural hot springs that are popular for relaxation on the Annapurna and Mustang corridors.
You continue to Kalopani for the night, where the air is cooler and the mountain setting feels more dramatic.
Day 5Drive to Geling | Kagbeni monasteries, Chungsi Cave stopOvernight: 3550 m
Today you continue up the Kali Gandaki valley and reach Kagbeni, the well-known gateway settlement before entering the restricted Upper Mustang region. Kagbeni sits at 2,804m and is famous for its old village character and monastery culture.
After permits and checkpost formalities, you drive onward into more arid, trans-Himalayan terrain. On the way, you can stop at the Chungsi (Ranchung) Cave Monastery area, located between Samar and Syangbochen, with a short walk to reach the cave and shrine setting.
Arrive in Geling and settle into a traditional lodge for a calm evening in the high desert.
Day 6Drive to Tsarang | Gami monasteries, cross Tsarang La, Tsarang palace and monasteriesOvernight: 3570 m
You drive deeper into Upper Mustang with the landscape becoming more open, dry, and dramatic, with cliffs and wind-shaped formations. En route, you pass the Ghami area where cultural sites and monasteries are part of the living heritage of the region. The drive includes crossing Tsarang La (often referenced as Chinggel La) around 3,870m, a scenic high point on the route.
Arriving in Tsarang is a major highlight because the village is known for its historic palace and important monastery presence.
You have time to explore calmly, then return to your lodge for the night.
Day 7Drive to Lo Manthang | Visit Lo Gekar (Ghar Gompa)Overnight: 3810 m
A full day in Lo Manthang lets you experience the walled city properly rather than rushing through. You visit the key monastery areas and take time to understand how Tibetan Buddhist culture is woven into daily life here. Many visitors focus on the main monastery complex atmosphere and the unique architecture that makes Lo Manthang feel completely different from lower Mustang towns. The day is paced for comfort, with short walks and plenty of rest breaks as needed.
Day 8Lo Manthang | Visit Buddhist monasteriesOvernight: 3810 m
A full day in Lo Manthang lets you experience the walled city properly rather than rushing through. You visit the key monastery areas and take time to understand how Tibetan Buddhist culture is woven into daily life here. Many visitors focus on the main monastery complex atmosphere and the unique architecture that makes Lo Manthang feel completely different from lower Mustang towns. The day is paced for comfort, with short walks and plenty of rest breaks as needed.
Day 9Lo Manthang | Namgyal, Tingkhar, Chhoser Valley and Jhong CaveOvernight: 3810 m
Today is dedicated to the wider Lo Manthang area, including the nearby valleys and cultural sites that make Upper Mustang so special. You explore the Chhoser side, where the famous Jhong Cave complex is one of the headline attractions, known for its multi-level “sky cave” structure.
The day also includes the Namgyal and Tingkhar area visits as listed, giving you a deeper look at settlements and viewpoints around the walled city. You return to Lo Manthang for the night, keeping the experience comfortable and unhurried.
Day 10Drive to Yara | Tashi Kabum and Luri GompaOvernight: 3650 m
You drive toward Yara and shift into a different side of Upper Mustang that is famous for cliff caves and sacred cave monasteries. The highlight is visiting Tashi Kabum and Luri Gompa, both strongly associated with the Yara area and known for their cave settings and spiritual significance.
This day usually includes short walks to reach the caves, so we keep the pace steady and comfortable. It is a very different feel from Lo Manthang, more quiet and cliff-focused, with a strong “hidden sanctuary” atmosphere. You end the day in Yara and rest well at high altitude.
Day 11Drive to SamarOvernight: 3600 m
Today you begin moving back toward the southern corridor, with the landscape gradually opening into the familiar Mustang plateau scenery again. Samar is a classic Upper Mustang stop and works well for breaking up the return journey. The day stays flexible, with time for photography stops and short cultural visits depending on road conditions and your energy. Arriving in Samar gives a comfortable rest point before the longer return day tomorrow.
Day 12Drive to Kalopani | Visit Muktinath and Lubra (Lupra)Overnight: 2530 m
Today you return toward lower Mustang and include a major spiritual highlight by visiting Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site located at 3,800m and revered by both Hindus and Buddhists.
If road timing and interest align, you can also visit Lubra (Lupra), a small village area known for its Bon cultural identity, which is a unique contrast to the dominant Tibetan Buddhist culture of Upper Mustang.
After the visits, you continue the drive down to Kalopani for a warmer, more restful night. This day often feels satisfying because you are gradually returning from the high desert back toward greener valleys.
Day 13Drive to PokharaOvernight: 815 m
You drive back to Pokhara, with the scenery changing dramatically as you descend from the trans-Himalayan zone into greener hills and river valleys. This is a long but scenic travel day, and we keep the schedule practical with comfort stops. Arriving back in Pokhara feels like returning to a different world, with lakeside comfort and easy walking. The evening is relaxed at the hotel, perfect for a good meal and rest.
Day 14Fly to Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m
Fly back to Kathmandu and we transfer you to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH). After the dusty high-desert adventure, Kathmandu comfort feels like a real reward, especially for a long shower and relaxed dinner. This is also a good evening for souvenir shopping and calm packing. We keep the schedule easy so the trip finishes smoothly.
Day 15 Kathmandu | Optional World Heritage SightseeingOvernight: 1350 m
This is your second Kathmandu day in this final block, so it can be used for Optional World Heritage Sightseeing. It also works as a buffer day in case domestic flights shift, keeping your international departure protected. Many guests use this day for a relaxed city walk, last shopping, and a farewell meal. We keep everything unhurried so the departure day feels stress-free.
Day 16Depart | Transfer to TIA
We transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) for your onward flight home.
