Overview
Upper Mustang is unlike any other trek in Nepal – a high, arid, Trans-Himalayan landscape in the rain shadow with a strong Tibetan cultural identity, ancient trade-route villages, and dramatic cliffs carved by wind and time. This extended itinerary follows the classic approach to Lo Manthang for monastery exploration, then continues on the quieter eastern route to Yara and Tangge, where the scenery becomes even more rugged and remote. You also have dedicated exploration days for Chosar Valley (sky caves) and the sacred sites near Yara like Luri Gompa and Tashi Kabum (Tashi Khabung).
This is a lodge trek, and we use the best available teahouses and lodges at each stop, keeping comfort practical for a remote region. The itinerary is 21 days including arrival and departure days, and it is paced to let you actually experience Lo Manthang and the eastern route rather than rushing through it.
Highlights
- Fly into Jomsom and enter the Kali Gandaki corridor, the gateway to Mustang’s high desert
- Reach Lo Manthang, the historic walled capital of the former Kingdom of Lo

- Trek to Jomsom via Lupra Gompa, adding a rare cultural detour before flying out
Itinerary
Day 1Arrive in Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m
Arrive in Kathmandu and we transfer you to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH). The day is kept light so you can rest, hydrate, and recover from travel. If you arrive early, you can take a short walk nearby and pick up any last essentials for Mustang such as sun protection and a buff for dust. In the evening, we keep things calm so you start the trip feeling fresh and well-rested.
Day 2Kathmandu | Optional World Heritage SightseeingOvernight: 1348 m
Today is your preparation day in Kathmandu, based at KGH. It can be used for a full trek briefing, checking layers for Mustang’s wind and dry air, and final packing. Because this is your second Kathmandu day, it can also be used for Optional World Heritage Sightseeing without feeling rushed. A relaxed evening helps a lot before the travel stage begins tomorrow.
Day 3Travel to PokharaOvernight: 815 m
Travel to Pokhara by flight or by road depending on your preference and schedule. Flying is quicker, while driving gives you a broader sense of Nepal’s countryside and river valleys. After arriving, the lakeside atmosphere is ideal for slowing down and getting good rest before the Jomsom flight. If time allows, an easy walk by Phewa Lake is a nice way to end the day without tiring yourself out.

Day 4Fly to Jomsom, drive to ChusangOvernight: 2980 m
You take a morning flight to Jomsom (mountain weather dependent) and then drive onward to Chusang to enter the Upper Mustang corridor. The landscape shifts quickly into dry, wind-sculpted terrain with cliffs, open valleys, and a distinctly Trans-Himalayan feel. This day is about a smooth transition and steady acclimatization, so we keep the pace gentle and focus on hydration. Chusang is a classic staging village and a comfortable place to settle in before the trek begins.

Day 5Trek to ShyangbocheOvernight: 3780 m
Today you begin trekking north on classic Upper Mustang trails with wide valleys, chortens, and long views across the high desert. This settlement is often spelled Shyangmochen on Upper Mustang itineraries, and your route starts to feel more remote compared to the lower Kali Gandaki corridor. Expect dry air and the possibility of wind later in the day, so starting earlier is usually more comfortable. The evening is ideal for a warm meal, a calm walk around the village, and an early rest.

Day 6Trek to DakmarOvernight: 3800 m
The trail continues through some of Mustang’s most striking scenery, where red cliffs and eroded formations create a dramatic backdrop. You pass traditional villages and long mani walls that give the day a strong cultural rhythm as well as scenery. Dakmar (also spelled Dhakmar) is known for its distinctive red landscape, and the setting feels very “old Mustang” in atmosphere. After arrival, it’s a great evening to slow down and enjoy the quiet before moving toward the big historic settlements.
Day 7Trek to CharangOvernight: 3570 m
Today you trek to Charang (also spelled Tsarang), one of Upper Mustang’s most important historic settlements. The trail typically includes open plateau walking and canyon views, and the feeling of Tibetan cultural influence becomes stronger as you go deeper into the former Kingdom of Lo. Charang is known for its monastery and palace area, and it often feels calmer and more spacious than the smaller trail villages. The afternoon is perfect for a relaxed walk through the village lanes and a quiet evening at the lodge.
Day 8Trek to Lo ManthangOvernight: 3810 m
This is one of the most exciting days of the trek as you reach Lo Manthang, the historic walled capital. The landscape opens and the approach feels like stepping into a different era, with the town’s walls and traditional architecture creating a true sense of arrival. Lo Manthang is culturally rich, but the best way to experience it is slowly, so we keep the afternoon relaxed once you check in. You will have time to settle in, explore a little, and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the old city.
Day 9Lo Manthang monastery exploration dayOvernight: 3810 m
A full day to explore Lo Manthang properly without rushing. You visit the major monasteries in and around the walled city, focusing on the cultural and artistic details that make Lo unique. You also have time to walk the lanes inside the walls, observe daily life, and appreciate the town’s unique layout and heritage. Because you sleep at the same altitude again, the day also supports acclimatization for the eastern route section ahead.
Day 10Lo Manthang Chosar Valley exploration dayOvernight: 3810 m
Today you visit the Chosar (Chhoser) Valley, one of the most fascinating side trips from Lo Manthang. This area is known for sky caves and cave monasteries, and it gives a deeper sense of Mustang’s long history of settlement and spiritual practice. The day is planned to be exploratory and flexible, allowing time for photography and unhurried visits rather than rushing between sites. You return to Lo Manthang for another comfortable night, which keeps the itinerary relaxed and immersive.
Day 11Trek to YaraOvernight: 3650 m
You leave Lo Manthang and move toward the quieter eastern side of Upper Mustang. The trail often feels less travelled than the main route, and the scenery becomes more rugged and canyon-like in places. Yara is known for its dramatic surroundings and traditional village atmosphere, and arriving here sets you up well for the sacred cave sites tomorrow. The evening is usually calm and peaceful, perfect for rest after the transition day.
Day 12Yara Luri Gompa and Tashi Khabung exploration dayOvernight: 3650 m
This is a major highlight day focused on Mustang’s cave heritage and spiritual sites. You visit Luri Gompa, a remarkable cave monastery set into the cliffs near Yara, approached by a scenic walk through rugged terrain. You also visit Tashi Kabum (often written Tashi Khabung), a revered cave shrine that adds depth to the region’s spiritual story. The day is planned with enough time to move steadily and safely on narrow paths, then return to Yara for a restful night.
Day 13Trek to TanggeOvernight: 3360 m
Today you trek to Tangge, one of the most distinctive villages on the eastern route. The landscape often feels wilder and more remote here, with dramatic canyon walls and wide open high-desert horizons. Tangge is known for its striking cluster of chortens and its quiet, traditional village life. After arrival, you have time to wander the village slowly and take in a part of Mustang that few trekkers ever see.
Day 14Tangge rest day - hike toward the Teri La routeOvernight: 3360 m
A rest day here is valuable because it slows the itinerary down in the most remote section of the trek. You can use the day for an exploratory hike up the valley on the historic trail that eventually leads toward Teri La, then return to Tangge for another night. The goal is not to cross the pass, but to experience the wild landscape and gain a deeper sense of Mustang’s borderland terrain. The afternoon is perfect for rest, warm food, and enjoying the village atmosphere without time pressure.
Day 15Trek to Chusang (long day 9+hr) carry pack LunchOvernight: 2980 m
This is one of the longer walking days as you make your way back toward Chusang from the eastern route. The scenery remains dramatic, with open desert ridges, canyon sections, and long views that feel very “Mustang” in character. Because it is a bigger day, steady pacing and good hydration make a huge difference to how it feels. Arriving back in Chusang is satisfying because it marks a clear transition toward the final Muktinath and Jomsom section.
Day 16Trek to MuktinathOvernight: 3800 m
Today you trek toward Muktinath, and the cultural atmosphere shifts as you approach one of Nepal’s most important pilgrimage sites. The landscape remains dry and open, but you will feel the area becoming more connected and active compared to the remote eastern villages. Muktinath is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, and arriving here adds a meaningful spiritual layer to the journey. After check-in, you have time to visit the temple area and experience the calm evening atmosphere around the shrine.
Day 17Trek to Jomsom (via Lupra Gompa)Overnight: 2735 m
You trek down toward Jomsom via Lupra, a small village known for its Bon heritage and monastery traditions. This route adds a quieter cultural detour rather than taking the most direct path, and it gives a different perspective on the Mustang landscape. As you descend, the air becomes richer and the valley feels wider, with the Kali Gandaki corridor opening up around you. Jomsom is a comfortable end with better facilities and an easy staging point for flights out.
Day 18Fly to PokharaOvernight: 815 m
You take an early flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, which is weather dependent but often very scenic when skies are clear. The shift from Mustang’s dry air to Pokhara’s lakeside comfort feels immediate and refreshing. After check-in, you can enjoy a long shower, good food, and a relaxed afternoon by the lake. This is a genuine recovery day after many nights in high desert villages.
Day 19PokharaOvernight: 815 m
A full free day in Pokhara gives the itinerary a premium, unhurried finish. You can keep it simple with lakeside cafés and rest, or add optional light activities depending on your mood. It is also a practical buffer in case the Jomsom flight schedule shifts due to weather. A calm evening here sets you up well for the flight back to Kathmandu tomorrow.
Day 20Fly to Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m
Fly to Kathmandu and we transfer you to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH). After trekking, returning to city comfort feels like a real reward, and this is a great evening for a celebratory dinner. You can also use the time for souvenir shopping or a final cultural stroll, depending on your energy. We keep the schedule relaxed so departure day feels smooth and stress-free.
Day 21Depart | Transfer to TIA
We transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) for your flight home. If your flight is later in the day, you can enjoy a calm breakfast and final moments in Kathmandu before the airport run.
