Overview
This condensed Upper Mustang trek is designed for travelers who want the region’s biggest cultural highlights without a longer wilderness extension. You begin with Kathmandu support (Kathmandu Guest House – KGH), travel to Pokhara, then fly into Jomsom and drive to Chusang to enter the Upper Mustang corridor. From there, you trek north through classic Trans-Himalayan landscapes toward Lo Manthang, passing traditional villages and dramatic cliff scenery that feels completely different from Nepal’s greener trekking regions.
In Lo Manthang, you have time to explore the historic walled capital and its major monasteries, plus a dedicated side trip to Chosar Valley for sky caves and cave monasteries. After that cultural peak, you drive back to Jomsom and fly out via Pokhara to Kathmandu, keeping the end of the trip smooth and time-efficient. This is a lodge trek – we use local teahouses and lodges along the route and select the best available options for comfort, cleanliness, and service.

Itinerary
Day 1Arrive in Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m
Arrive in Kathmandu and we transfer you to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH). The day is kept light so you can rest, hydrate, and recover from travel. If you arrive early, you can take a short walk nearby and pick up any last essentials like sunscreen and a buff for dusty Mustang conditions. In the evening, we keep things calm so you start the trip feeling fresh.
Day 2Kathmandu | Optional World Heritage SightseeingOvernight: 1350 m
Today is your preparation day in Kathmandu, based at KGH, and it can also be used for Optional World Heritage Sightseeing. You will have time for a trek briefing, final packing, and checking layers for Mustang’s wind and dry air. If you want sightseeing, this day fits perfectly because the travel stage starts tomorrow. A relaxed evening helps you rest well before the Pokhara transfer.
Day 3Travel to PokharaOvernight: 815 m
Travel to Pokhara by flight or road depending on your preference and schedule. Flying is quicker, while driving gives you a broader sense of Nepal’s countryside and river valleys. After arriving, the lakeside atmosphere is ideal for slowing down and resting before the Jomsom flight. If time allows, an easy walk by Phewa Lake is a great way to end the day.
Day 4Fly to Jomsom, drive to ChusangOvernight: 2980 m
You take a morning flight to Jomsom (weather dependent) and then drive onward to Chusang to enter the Upper Mustang corridor. The environment shifts quickly into dry, wind-sculpted terrain with cliffs and open valleys, very different from the greener hills around Pokhara. This day is kept gentle for acclimatization, so we focus on steady hydration and an early night. Chusang is a classic staging village and a comfortable place to begin trekking tomorrow.
Day 5Trek to ShyangbocheOvernight: 3780 m
Today you begin trekking north on classic Upper Mustang trails with wide valleys, chortens, and long views across the high desert. The air is dry and the wind can pick up later in the day, so starting earlier usually feels more comfortable. Shyangboche is often written as Shyangmochen on trekking references, and it is a quiet village stop that feels noticeably more remote than the lower Kali Gandaki corridor. The evening is calm and simple, perfect for rest before continuing deeper.
Day 6Trek to DakmarOvernight: 3800 m
The trail continues through Mustang’s dramatic landscapes, with eroded cliffs and open plateaus shaping the day. This section feels strongly cultural as well, with long mani walls and traditional village markers appearing frequently along the route. Dakmar (Dhakmar) is known for its striking red cliffs and a very “old Mustang” atmosphere. After arrival, it is a great place to slow down and enjoy the quiet before the larger historic settlements ahead.
Day 7Trek to CharangOvernight: 3570 m
You trek to Charang (Tsarang), one of Upper Mustang’s most important historic villages. The surroundings remain dry and open, and the feeling of Tibetan cultural influence becomes stronger as you move deeper into the former Kingdom of Lo. Charang is known for its monastery and palace setting, and it often feels calm and spacious compared to smaller trail villages. The afternoon is ideal for a relaxed walk through the village lanes and a quiet evening at the lodge.
Day 8Trek to Lo ManthangOvernight: 3810 m
This is a major highlight day as you reach Lo Manthang, the historic walled capital of Upper Mustang. The approach feels like stepping into another era, with the town’s walls and traditional architecture creating a strong sense of arrival. We keep the afternoon relaxed so you can settle in and begin exploring without rushing. The atmosphere here is unique in Nepal - cultural, remote, and distinctly Trans-Himalayan.
Day 9Lo Manthang monastery exploration dayOvernight: 3810 m
A full day to explore Lo Manthang properly. You visit the major monasteries in and around the walled city and take time to appreciate the art, architecture, and spiritual heritage that make Lo famous. You also have time to walk the lanes inside the walls and observe daily life in this high-desert capital. Because you sleep at the same altitude again, the day also supports acclimatization and recovery.
Day 10Lo Manthang Chosar Valley exploration dayOvernight: 3810 m
Today you explore the Chosar (Chhoser) Valley, one of the most fascinating side trips from Lo Manthang. This area is known for sky caves and cave monasteries, giving a deeper sense of Mustang’s long history of settlement and spiritual practice. The day is planned to be exploratory and flexible, with time for photography and unhurried visits rather than rushing between sites. You return to Lo Manthang for another comfortable night.
Day 11Drive to JomsomOvernight: 2735 m
You leave Lo Manthang and travel back south toward Jomsom by vehicle, retracing the dramatic Kali Gandaki corridor. The return drive gives you a different perspective on the high desert landscapes and canyon walls you walked through earlier. This is a comfortable logistics day that keeps the trip time-efficient while still letting you enjoy the scenery. In Jomsom, you can rest well and prepare for the mountain flight the next morning.
Day 12Fly to PokharaOvernight: 815 m
You take an early flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, which is weather dependent but often very scenic when skies are clear. The shift from Mustang’s dry air to Pokhara’s lakeside comfort feels immediate and refreshing. After check-in, you can enjoy a long shower, good food, and a relaxed afternoon. This is a recovery day that helps the trip feel comfortable and complete.
Day 13Fly to Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m
Fly back to Kathmandu and we transfer you to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH). After days in Mustang, returning to city comfort feels like a real reward and a great time for a celebratory dinner. You can also use the evening for souvenir shopping or a final cultural stroll depending on your energy. We keep the schedule relaxed so departure day feels smooth.
Day 14Depart | Transfer to TIA
We transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) for your flight home. If your flight is later in the day, you can enjoy a calm breakfast and final moments in Kathmandu before the airport run.
