Overview

This trek is the best of both classic Khumbu routes in one journey – you follow the legendary trail to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar, then cross the high Cho La Pass to reach the turquoise Gokyo Lakes and climb Gokyo Ri for one of the finest panoramas in the region. Along the way you experience Sherpa heartland culture in Namche Bazaar, high valley settlements like Phortse and Pangboche, and the stark glacial landscapes around Lobuche and Gorak Shep.

The itinerary is designed with smart acclimatization built in, including a day trip above Namche to the Everest View Hotel area and a side valley outing from Dingboche to Chhukhung. After your Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar days, you take the quieter trail to Dzongla and cross Cho La into the Gokyo Valley, finishing with a relaxed descent through Dole and back to Lukla.

Highlights

  • Flight into Lukla and trekking through classic Khumbu villages and suspension bridges along the Dudh Koshi
  • Namche Bazaar – the Sherpa hub of the Everest region, perfect for acclimatization and local culture
  • Day hike to the Everest View Hotel area for big Himalayan scenery and confidence-building acclimatization
  • Phortse and Pangboche – quieter Sherpa villages with a more traditional feel away from the main trail
  • Dingboche and the wide Imja Valley landscapes beneath iconic peaks like Ama Dablam
  • Everest Base Camp visit – standing on the edge of the Khumbu Glacier trekking world
  • Kala Patthar viewpoint – the most famous non-climbing viewpoint for close-up Everest scenery
  • The Cho La Pass crossing – a high, dramatic route that often involves snowy, glaciated terrain
  • Gokyo Lakes and the Ngozumpa Glacier scenery – a totally different side of the Khumbu
  • Gokyo Ri or Fifth Lake day trip – huge panoramas and a memorable finale before descending

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m

Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to your hotel. The day is intentionally light so you can settle in, recover from travel, and get comfortable before heading into the mountains. If you arrive early, a gentle walk and a relaxed dinner is a great way to start the trip.

Day 2Kathmandu / Drive to Manthali, Ramechhap (474m)Overnight: 1350 m

This day stays flexible depending on how your Lukla flights are operating. If flying from Kathmandu, you can use the day for preparation, final gear checks, and a calm evening in the city. If flying from Manthali, you drive out of the valley to position for an early start the next morning.
1350m or

Day 3Fly to Lukla (from Kathmandu or Manthali) | Trek to MonjoOvernight: 2835 m

After the mountain flight, you begin on a well-established trail that follows the Dudh Koshi valley through small Sherpa settlements and forested riverside paths. The day is a beautiful introduction to the region with constant movement of trekkers, porters, and local life along the trail. Monjo is a classic stop just below the Sagarmatha National Park entry area.

Day 4Trek to Namche BazaarOvernight: 3440 m

Today you enter Sagarmatha National Park and follow the river upstream, crossing famous suspension bridges and gradually gaining height as the valley tightens. The final climb into Namche is a real “arrival moment” as the amphitheatre-shaped town appears across the hillside. Namche is the Sherpa hub of the region and a great place to slow down, eat well, and acclimatize properly.

Day 5Namche | Day Trip to the Everest View HotelOvernight: 3440 m

This acclimatization day takes you above Namche on scenic trails toward Syangboche and the Everest View Hotel area. The goal is to gain height safely and return to sleep lower, while enjoying some of the best early views in the region when skies are clear. You usually pass through or near traditional villages like Khumjung on the way, then return to Namche for a comfortable evening.

Day 6Trek to PhortseOvernight: 3840 m

Leaving the busy main route behind, you take a quieter trail into a more traditional Sherpa village setting. The route often feels more peaceful and open, with wide valley views and a strong sense of being “in the mountains” without the crowds. Phortse is known for its authentic village character and its position off the main trekking highway.

Day 7Trek to PangbocheOvernight: 3985 m

You continue through the upper Khumbu with increasingly dramatic mountain scenery, linking high villages with strong Sherpa heritage. Pangboche is a significant settlement in the Imja Khola valley and is well known for its monastery and close mountain presence, especially around Ama Dablam on clear days. The evening here feels distinctly high Himalayan, with crisp air and big horizons.

Day 8Trek to DingbocheOvernight: 4410 m

The trail continues up-valley into more open terrain with fewer trees and more stone-walled fields, yak pastures, and alpine atmosphere. Dingboche sits in a broad, sunny area of the upper valley and is one of the key acclimatization bases in the region. It’s a great place to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the changing landscapes as you move toward higher ground.

Day 9Day trip to ChhukhungOvernight: 4410 m

Today is a classic acclimatization side valley outing, heading deeper into the Chhukhung Valley beneath glaciated peaks and high ridgelines. You get a stronger sense of the region’s scale and the icy world that sits just above the trekking settlements. After spending time in Chhukhung, you return to Dingboche for a second night to strengthen acclimatization before moving higher.

Day 10Trek to LobucheOvernight: 4940 m

You move higher into a more rugged landscape of rock, moraine, and thinner air. This section is known for its stark beauty and the feeling of trekking alongside the world of glaciers and high peaks. Lobuche is one of the last major lodge stops before Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp, and the atmosphere here feels distinctly “expedition-like.”

Day 11Trek to Gorak Shep | Visit Everest Base Camp or Kala PattharOvernight: 5160 m

Following the trail along glacial moraines, you reach Gorak Shep, a remote settlement on a sandy basin beside the Khumbu Glacier. After a short rest, you continue toward Everest Base Camp, walking across rocky glacier terrain and the shifting landscape created by ice and moraine. You return to Gorak Shep for the night, with the high-altitude feel of the Khumbu all around you.

Day 12Trek to Lobuche | Visit Kala Patthar or Everest Base CampOvernight: 4939 m

An early start takes you up to Kala Patthar, the famous viewpoint known for the most accessible close-up views of Everest’s massive surroundings. After taking in the panorama, you descend back to Gorak Shep, then continue down to Lobuche for a better night’s rest. This day is often one of the most memorable for mountain views and overall atmosphere.

Day 13Trek to DzonglaOvernight: 4830 m

You leave the main base camp corridor and take the quieter trail toward Dzongla, a small settlement used as the staging point for Cho La. The scenery feels wilder and more intimate here, with rugged slopes and a strong high-mountain mood. Dzongla is a great place to rest and prepare for the pass day.

Day 14Trek to Thagnak via Cho La Pass (5420m)Overnight: 4700 m

Today is the big linking day between the Everest Base Camp side and the Gokyo Valley. You climb toward Cho La Pass and cross high, glaciated terrain that can be snowy and slippery depending on season, then descend carefully into the Gokyo side. Thagnak sits near the Ngozumpa Glacier area and feels like a true high alpine outpost.

Day 15Trek to GokyoOvernight: 4748 m

You continue into the Gokyo Valley, trekking through dramatic moraine landscapes shaped by the Ngozumpa Glacier. The arrival into Gokyo is special - the lakes appear in striking color when skies are clear, and the setting feels calmer and more open than the Khumbu Glacier corridor. The village atmosphere is quiet, scenic, and perfectly placed for viewpoints.

Day 16Day trip to Gokyo Ri or Fifth LakeOvernight: 4749 m

A flexible highlight day. Gokyo Ri is the classic climb for a wide Himalayan panorama, while the walk toward the Fifth Lake area offers a quieter, higher-lake perspective above the main settlement. Either option adds a powerful scenic finale to your trek before you start descending.

Day 17Trek to DoleOvernight: 4038 m

You begin descending through the Gokyo Valley, moving back into lower alpine terrain with increasing vegetation. The trail passes through small settlements and yak-grazing areas, and the air starts to feel thicker and more comfortable again. Dole is a peaceful stop that feels tucked into the hillside.

Day 18Trek to Namche BazaarOvernight: 3440 m

Continuing the descent, you follow the route back toward the main Khumbu corridor. Forest returns, villages feel more lively, and you gradually re-enter the bustling energy of Namche Bazaar. It’s a satisfying return to comfort and variety after the high, remote sections of the trek.

Day 19Trek to LuklaOvernight: 2859 m

You retrace the trail down the Dudh Koshi valley, crossing the familiar suspension bridges and passing through villages that now feel like old friends. The final approach to Lukla is a classic end-of-trek moment, with time to relax, celebrate, and enjoy the last evening in the mountains.

Day 20Fly to Kathmandu or Manthali, Ramechhap | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m

Fly back, either directly to Kathmandu or Manthali (followed by a semi-long drive back), then transfer to your hotel. After days in the mountains, returning to city comfort feels like a proper reward.

Day 21KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m

A free day for rest, souvenir shopping, or cultural sightseeing. It also works as a practical buffer for mountain flight logistics. Many guests enjoy a final celebratory dinner and an easy evening before departure.

Day 22Depart | Transfer to TIA

Transfer to the airport for your onward flight home.
