Overview
The Helambu Villages Trek is a culture-rich, mid-hill trekking journey that starts close to Kathmandu and focuses on village life rather than extreme altitude. After a short drive to Jhule, you trek through forested ridgelines and traditional hill settlements like Chisapani and Gul Bhanjyang, then continue deeper into the Helambu region toward Hyolmo (Yolmo) communities such as Melamchi Gaun, Tarkeghyang, and Sermathang. These villages are well known for their Buddhist heritage, monastery culture, and calmer pace compared to Nepal’s busiest trekking highways.
This itinerary includes a dedicated day to explore around Sermathang, which makes the trek feel unhurried and lets you enjoy local walks, viewpoints, and village atmosphere. You then trek back down to the Melamchi area and return to Kathmandu by road with a comfortable buffer day before departure.

Itinerary
Day 1Arrive in KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m
Arrive in Nepal’s capital and transfer to your hotel. The day is kept light so you can rest, hydrate, and settle in smoothly after travel.
If you arrive early, a relaxed walk and an easy dinner is a great way to start the trip.
Day 2KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m
A flexible day for preparation and orientation. This is a good time for a trek briefing, packing, and any last-minute essentials so the trekking days feel smooth.
If you want, you can also add optional sightseeing and still keep the day comfortable and unhurried.
Day 3Trek to ChisapaniOvernight: 2180 m
You drive out of Kathmandu to Jhule and begin trekking through forest trails and ridgelines above the valley. The route quickly feels greener and quieter than the city, with a classic near-Kathmandu hill trek atmosphere.
Chisapani is a popular ridge-top stop with a calm village feel and a great place to settle in for your first night on the trail.
Day 4Trek to Gul BhanjyangOvernight: 2130 m
Today continues through mid-hill village paths and forest sections, with a gentle rhythm of short climbs and descents as the ridgeline route rolls onward.
Gul Bhanjyang is a traditional hill settlement surrounded by terraces and forest, and it feels like a lived-in, local Nepal far from the main tourist corridors.
Day 5Trek to MangangothOvernight: 3420 m
You move deeper into the Helambu approach area, with the trail becoming quieter and more remote as you gain altitude. Forest sections can feel cooler and more enclosed, while clearings offer open hill views.
Mangangoth is your highest overnight on this itinerary, and arriving here gives a stronger “mountain trek” feel compared to the earlier ridge villages.
Day 6Trek to Melamchi GaunOvernight: 2530 m
You descend from the higher ridges toward Helambu village corridors, with the scenery shifting back into warmer, lived-in landscapes. The day feels culturally interesting as you approach settlements known for Hyolmo heritage.
Melamchi Gaun is an important Helambu village stop, calmer and more traditional than Nepal’s busiest trekking towns.
Day 7Trek to TarkeghyangOvernight: 2600 m
A classic Helambu village day. The trail links settlements through hills and forest, often with monastery culture and prayer markers becoming more noticeable as you enter the Hyolmo heartland.
Tarkeghyang is one of Helambu’s best-known villages, with a strong cultural identity and a peaceful atmosphere that feels distinctly Buddhist-Himalayan.
Day 8Trek to SermathangOvernight: 2590 m
You continue along Helambu trails with a relaxed pace and a clear village-to-village flow. The day feels scenic and comfortable, with plenty of time to enjoy the landscape and the calm rhythm of the region.
Sermathang is a welcoming Helambu village known for its traditional feel and an easygoing overnight atmosphere.
Day 9Explore around SermathangOvernight: 2590 m
A full day to enjoy Sermathang properly. You can take short local walks to viewpoints, visit village areas connected to monastery life, and simply experience daily rhythms in a Helambu community.
This slower day makes the trek feel more human and immersive, and it gives your legs a proper break before the final descent and drive back to Kathmandu.
Day 10Trek to Melamchi, drive to KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m
You trek down from Sermathang toward the Melamchi area, with the landscape gradually becoming warmer and more settled as you lose altitude. It’s a satisfying final walking day where the trek gently transitions back toward roads and wider valley life.
After the trek, you drive back to Kathmandu for a comfortable evening and a well-earned rest.
Day 11KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m
A free day in Kathmandu for rest, shopping, or optional sightseeing. It also serves as a comfortable buffer day so the trip ends smoothly and without stress.
Enjoy a final relaxed day and a farewell meal before your flight.
