Overview
This trek blends two very different Himalayan experiences into one journey – the warm, lived-in villages of Helambu and the dramatic, high-altitude lake basin of Gosaikunda inside Langtang National Park. You begin with a drive out of Kathmandu to the Melamchi area, then trek through beautiful Hyolmo (Yolmo) settlements such as Sermathang, Tarkeghyang, and Melamchi Gaun, where monastery culture and mountain village life are a big part of the experience.
From there, the route climbs into more remote forest and ridge terrain toward Ghopte/Phedi, then crosses Lauribina La (4,610m) and reaches Gosaikunda Lake (4,380m) – a revered pilgrimage destination, especially associated with Hindu tradition and Lord Shiva. After experiencing the lake area, you descend through Sing Gompa (Chandanbari) and finish in Dhunche, returning to Kathmandu by road with an extra buffer day before departure.
Highlights
- Trek through Helambu’s Hyolmo (Yolmo) villages with a strong cultural feel
- Sermathang and Tarkeghyang – classic Helambu stops known for village atmosphere and monasteries
- A scenic transition from green mid-hills into high ridge and alpine terrain
- Reach Gosaikunda Lake (4,380m), a sacred lake complex and Ramsar site
- Cross Lauribina La (4,610m), the high point of the trek
- Big mountain atmosphere around the lake basin, especially in clear weather
- Descend via Sing Gompa (Chandanbari), a well-known monastery stop on the route
- Finish in Dhunche (2,030m), the Rasuwa district headquarters and a key trekking gateway

Itinerary
Day 1Arrive in KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m
Arrive in Nepal’s capital and transfer to your hotel. The day is kept easy so you can rest, hydrate, and settle in smoothly after travel.
If you arrive early, a relaxed walk and calm dinner is a great way to start.
Day 2Kathmandu | Optional World Heritage sightseeingOvernight: 1350 m
A flexible day to prepare for the trek and enjoy Kathmandu at a comfortable pace. If you choose sightseeing, it’s a great chance to explore UNESCO World Heritage areas without rushing.
You will also have time for a trek briefing, packing, and any last-minute essentials.
Day 3Drive to Melamchi, trek to SermathangOvernight: 2587 m
You leave the city behind and drive toward the Melamchi area, then start trekking into Helambu. The trail quickly shifts into rural mountain life with terraced hillsides, forest edges, and village paths.
Sermathang feels like a true Helambu welcome - peaceful, traditional, and strongly connected to local Buddhist culture.
Day 4Trek to TarkeghyangOvernight: 2600 m
Today is a classic Helambu village day, linking settlements through hills, forest, and open viewpoints as the landscape rises and falls naturally.
Tarkeghyang is one of the best-known Helambu villages and is often highlighted for its Hyolmo culture and monastery presence.
Day 5Trek to Melamchi GaunOvernight: 2530 m
The trail continues through lived-in mountain scenery, with traditional village rhythms and changing angles across the hills.
Melamchi Gaun is another important Hyolmo settlement and feels calmer and more local compared to busier trekking highways.
Day 6Trek to Ghopte or PhediOvernight: 3430 m
You begin shifting away from village corridors into more remote ridge and forest terrain. The atmosphere becomes quieter, with fewer settlements and a stronger “in the mountains” feeling.
Depending on conditions and pacing, you overnight at Ghopte or continue to Phedi to position well for the high crossing and lake day ahead.
Day 7Trek to Gosaikunda (via Lauribina Pass)Overnight: 4380 m
A defining day of the trek. You climb to Lauribina La (4,610m) and then continue to the sacred lake basin of Gosaikunda (4,380m).
Reaching the lake feels special - the setting is stark, high, and spiritually significant, with the lake widely revered in Hindu tradition.
Day 8Trek to Sing Gompa (Chandanbari)Overnight: 3330 m
You descend from the lake zone into a more sheltered landscape where forest gradually returns and the air feels noticeably richer.
Sing Gompa (Chandanbari) is a well-known stop with a monastery presence and a calm mountain-village feel.
Day 9Trek to DhuncheOvernight: 2030 m
Continue descending through forested trails and hillside paths toward Dhunche, with warmer temperatures and more village activity returning as you lose altitude.
Dhunche is the administrative center of Rasuwa and a major gateway town for the Langtang and Gosaikunda areas.
Day 10Drive to KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m
Drive back to Kathmandu and return to your hotel. After days on the trail, city comfort feels like a reward - hot shower, great food, and a relaxed evening.
This is also a good time for souvenir browsing or a final dinner out.
Day 11Kathmandu | Optional World Heritage sightseeingOvernight: 1350 m
A free day for rest, shopping, or optional sightseeing. This day also acts as a helpful buffer to keep the end of the trip smooth and stress-free.
