Overview
The Gokyo Valley Trek is a beautiful Everest-region alternative to Everest Base Camp – a quieter route that still delivers huge Himalayan scenery. After flying to Lukla, you follow the Dudh Koshi valley to Namche Bazaar, then climb above Namche into the Khumjung Valley (Khunde area) with a visit to the Everest View Hotel ridge for early panoramic views.
From there, you leave the busier main corridor and head into the Gokyo Valley via Dole and Machhermo, approaching the glacial lake system near Gokyo village and the Ngozumpa Glacier area. Two dedicated exploration days let you reach the Fifth Lake area and climb Gokyo Ri – one of the best viewpoints in the Khumbu on a clear day.
Highlights
- Scenic flight to Lukla and a true Everest-region trail start
- Namche Bazaar – the Sherpa hub of the Khumbu and a great acclimatization base
- Everest View Hotel ridge visit for early Himalayan panoramas
- Khunde and the Khumjung Valley area – quieter and more traditional than the main highway
- A less-crowded climb into the Gokyo Valley via Dole and Machhermo
- Gokyo village beside the third lake (Dudh Pokhari) – a unique high Himalayan setting
- Fifth Lake day trip for a wilder, higher perspective above the main settlement
- Gokyo Ri sunrise climb – huge panoramas and the chance to see four 8,000m peaks on clear days (Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu)
- A satisfying loop back via Phortse, one of the quieter Sherpa villages off the main trail
Itinerary
Day 1Arrive in Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m
Arrive in Nepal’s capital and transfer to your hotel. Keep the day light so you can rest, hydrate, and settle in comfortably before the trek begins.
If you arrive early, a relaxed walk and a calm dinner is a perfect start.
Day 2Kathmandu, or drive to Manthali (Ramechhap) for the early Lukla flightOvernight: 1350 m
This day stays flexible depending on Lukla flight operations. If flights are running from Kathmandu, use the day for a briefing, final gear checks, and an easy evening.
If flights are routed via Manthali, you drive out of the valley and position for the early flight the next morning.
Day 3Flight to Lukla | Trek to MonjoOvernight: 2835 m
After the mountain flight into Lukla, you begin trekking along the Dudh Koshi valley on a lively, well-established trail with bridges, small settlements, and riverside forest.
Monjo is a classic stopping point close to the Sagarmatha National Park entry area, making it a natural place to settle in on your first trek night.
Day 4Trek to Namche BazaarOvernight: 3440 m
You enter Sagarmatha National Park and continue upstream with suspension bridges and steady valley views as the route gains altitude.
The final climb into Namche is a real milestone moment as the amphitheatre-shaped town comes into view across the hillside.
Day 5Trek to Khunde | Visit to Everest View Hotel ridgeOvernight: 3840 m
Today you climb above Namche into the Khumjung Valley area where the trail opens to wider viewpoints and crisp alpine air.
You include a visit to the Everest View Hotel ridge, a famous panorama point (around 3,880m), then continue to the calmer Sherpa village of Khunde.
Day 6Trek to DoleOvernight: 4038 m
You shift away from the busier main corridor and commit to the quieter Gokyo route. The landscape gradually becomes more open and alpine as you gain altitude.
Dole is a peaceful hillside stop that feels like a true transition into the upper Gokyo Valley.
Day 7Trek to MachhermoOvernight: 4470 m
The trail continues higher with thinner vegetation and a stronger high-altitude feel. Valleys widen and the scenery becomes more rugged and glacial in character.
Machhermo is a key staging village before Gokyo - a good place to rest well and let your body settle at altitude.
Day 8Trek to GokyoOvernight: 4750 m
A dramatic approach day as you climb into the Gokyo Valley, where the terrain feels shaped by glaciers and moraine.
Reaching Gokyo is special - the village sits beside the third Gokyo lake (Dudh Pokhari), with a calm atmosphere and striking high-mountain scenery.
Day 9Day trip to the Fifth Lake areaOvernight: 4750 m
A full exploration day to go higher above the main settlement and experience the wilder side of the Gokyo lake system. The views feel more expansive as you move away from the lodges.
You return to Gokyo for another night, keeping the pace comfortable and supportive for acclimatization.
Day 10Day trip to Gokyo RiOvernight: 4748 m
A classic viewpoint day and the trek’s signature highlight. An early start often gives the best chance of clear skies and dramatic morning light.
From the summit of Gokyo Ri, it is possible to see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu on a clear day.
Day 11Trek to PhortseOvernight: 3840 m
You begin descending out of the Gokyo Valley, with the landscape gradually becoming more sheltered and comfortable as oxygen increases.
Phortse is a quieter Sherpa village off the main trekking circuit, giving you a more traditional feel compared to the busiest trail villages.
Day 12Trek to Namche BazaarOvernight: 3440 m
You continue back toward the Khumbu’s main hub, with trails becoming livelier again as you rejoin more travelled sections.
Returning to Namche feels comfortable - good food options, a social trekking atmosphere, and a satisfying sense of progress toward the finish.
Day 13Trek to LuklaOvernight: 2860 m
A classic final trekking day down the Dudh Koshi valley with familiar bridges and villages, and greener scenery returning as you lose altitude.
Arriving in Lukla is the traditional end-of-trek moment - time to relax, celebrate, and prepare for the flight out.
Day 14Flight to KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m
Fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to your hotel. After the high valleys, city comfort feels like a real reward.
This is a great evening for a proper shower, good food, and a relaxed night in the city.
Day 15KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m
A free day in Kathmandu for rest, shopping, or optional sightseeing.
This day also works as a buffer in case Lukla flights were delayed due to mountain weather.
Day 16Depart | Transfer to TIA
Transfer to the airport for your onward flight home.
