Overview

This trek is a stunning Everest-region journey that focuses on the Gokyo Valley rather than Everest Base Camp – combining Sherpa culture, quieter trails, and some of the region’s best panoramas. You fly to Lukla, walk the classic Dudh Koshi valley trail to Namche Bazaar, then climb above Namche into the Khumjung valley (Khunde area) with a visit to the Everest View viewpoint. From there, you leave the busier main corridor and trek deeper into the Gokyo Valley through Dole and Machhermo to reach Gokyo village and its famous glacial lakes.

You spend quality time in Gokyo with two dedicated exploration days – one to reach the Fifth Lake area and one for the sunrise climb of Gokyo Ri – then cross Renjo La to complete a true loop trek via Lungden and Thame before returning to Namche and Lukla. In Kathmandu, you stay at Kathmandu Guest House (KGH), with optional World Heritage sightseeing on your city days.

Highlights

  • Classic Lukla flight and the beautiful Dudh Koshi valley trail experience
  • Namche Bazaar – the Sherpa hub of the Everest region and the perfect acclimatization base
  • Khunde and the Khumjung valley – a more traditional Sherpa area above Namche
  • Everest View viewpoint visit for early Himalayan panoramas without going deep into the high camps
  • A quieter, less crowded route into the Gokyo Valley via Dole and Machhermo
  • Gokyo Lakes – a famous high-altitude chain of glacial lakes with unforgettable colors in clear weather
  • Fifth Lake day trip for a wilder, higher perspective above the main settlement
  • Gokyo Ri sunrise climb – one of the best panoramas in the Khumbu
  • Renjo La Pass crossing – a dramatic high pass that completes the loop and adds real adventure
  • Thame village – a culturally rich, quieter Sherpa valley before returning to Namche

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m

Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH). The day is kept light so you can settle in, rest, and start fresh.
If you arrive early, an easy walk and a calm dinner is the perfect low-effort start to the trip.

Day 2Kathmandu (KGH) | Optional World Heritage sightseeing - or drive to Manthali (Ramechhap) for early Lukla flightOvernight: 1350 m

Enjoy a comfortable city day at KGH with the option to explore UNESCO World Heritage areas if you want a cultural warm-up before trekking.
Everest-region flight logistics can vary by season - if Lukla flights are routed via Manthali, this day can also be used to drive there so you are positioned for an early flight the next morning.
Overnight Sleeping Altitude is 474m if staying in Manthali

Day 3Flight to Lukla | Trek to MonjoOvernight: 2834 m

After the mountain flight into Lukla, you begin trekking on the classic Khumbu trail along the Dudh Koshi valley. Expect suspension bridges, riverside forests, and small Sherpa settlements that make the first day feel lively and welcoming.
Monjo is a traditional stopping point just below the Sagarmatha National Park entry checkpoint, so it’s a natural place to settle in for the night.

Day 4Trek to Namche BazaarOvernight: 3440 m

You enter Sagarmatha National Park and follow the river upstream, crossing famous suspension bridges as the valley tightens and the mountains feel closer.
The final climb into Namche is one of the trek’s signature moments - the amphitheatre-shaped town appears across the hillside, and the whole region suddenly feels “real Everest.”

Day 5Trek to Khunde | Visit to Everest View HotelOvernight: 3840 m

Today you climb above Namche into the Khumjung valley area, where trails open up to wider horizons and crisp alpine air. You include a visit to the Everest View viewpoint area, which is famous for early panoramas on clear days.
You continue to Khunde, a traditional Sherpa village that feels calmer and more local than the main trail, and a great place to settle into the higher altitude comfortably.

Day 6Trek to DoleOvernight: 4038 m

You leave the busy main corridor and shift into the quieter Gokyo route. The day typically moves through changing terrain - from wooded sections to more open hillside paths as you gain height.
Dole is a peaceful village stop that feels like a genuine transition into the less-crowded Gokyo valley journey.

Day 7Trek to MachhermoOvernight: 4470 m

The trail continues deeper into the upper valley with a stronger sense of high altitude and a more open, alpine feel. Vegetation thins and the landscape becomes more rugged and spacious.
Machhermo is a key staging village before Gokyo, and it’s a good place to rest well and let your body absorb the altitude gain.

Day 8Trek to GokyoOvernight: 4750 m

A dramatic approach day into the Gokyo valley - the terrain feels glacial and high Himalayan, with big open views and the sense of trekking into a mountain bowl.
Reaching Gokyo is a special moment because the lakes and the setting feel completely different from the Everest Base Camp corridor - calmer, wider, and visually striking.

Day 9Day trip to the Fifth Lake areaOvernight: 4750 m

A full exploration day to go higher above the main settlement and experience the wilder side of the Gokyo lake system. The route feels more remote and open as you move away from the lodges and into higher viewpoints.
You return to Gokyo for another comfortable night, which also helps acclimatization before the next viewpoint day.

Day 10Day trip to Gokyo RiOvernight: 4750 m

A classic viewpoint day and one of the biggest scenic highlights of the trek. An early start is common to catch the best light and clearest skies, with a panoramic summit experience that is famous in the Everest region.
You return to Gokyo for the night, giving you time to relax, rehydrate, and prepare for the pass crossing ahead.

Day 11Trek to Lungden | Cross Renjo La PassOvernight: 4380 m

This is the trek’s defining crossing day. You climb to Renjo La, a high Himalayan pass that completes the loop and offers a dramatic transition out of the Gokyo valley.
After the pass, you descend into a quieter side valley to reach Lungden, where the atmosphere feels more remote and traditional again.

Day 12Trek to ThameOvernight: 3799 m

You continue descending through a Sherpa valley that feels calmer and more local compared to the main Namche corridor. The landscape becomes warmer and more sheltered as you lose altitude.
Thame is a beautiful village with strong cultural identity and an important monastery presence, making it a meaningful place to stop before returning to the busier hub.

Day 13Trek to Namche BazaarOvernight: 3440 m

The route brings you back toward the Khumbu’s main center, with trails becoming more active and familiar. Returning to Namche feels comfortable - better facilities, bakeries, cafés, and a lively mountain-town atmosphere.
It is also a satisfying milestone because the trek starts to feel clearly “on the way home.”

Day 14Trek to LuklaOvernight: 2860 m

You descend the Dudh Koshi valley on the classic return route, crossing familiar suspension bridges and moving back into greener forested landscapes.
Arriving in Lukla is the traditional end-of-trek moment - time to relax, celebrate, and get ready for the flight out.

Day 15Flight to Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m

Fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH). After high mountain days, city comfort feels like a real reward - hot shower, great food, and a slow evening.
If flights are routed via Manthali, the day may include the short flight segment plus the road transfer back into Kathmandu.

Day 16Kathmandu (KGH) | Optional World Heritage sightseeingOvernight: 1350 m

A relaxed city day with the option for World Heritage sightseeing, souvenir shopping, or simply resting and enjoying good cafés.
This day also acts as a buffer in case Lukla flights were delayed due to mountain weather.
