Overview

The Annapurna Circuit is one of Nepal’s most iconic teahouse treks because the journey feels like a true traverse – you climb steadily through the Marsyangdi Valley from green mid-hills into the high, open landscapes of Manang, acclimatize in one of the Himalaya’s most atmospheric mountain towns, then complete the famous crossing of Thorong La before descending into the stark, wind-carved Kali Gandaki region.

This itinerary starts with a drive from Kathmandu to Dharapani, then follows the classic trail through Chame and Upper Pisang to Manang. After a dedicated acclimatization day, you continue higher to Thorong Phedi or High Camp, cross Thorong La to reach Muktinath (a major pilgrimage site), then finish to Jomsom via the quieter cultural route through Lupra Gompa before flying out via Pokhara and returning to Kathmandu.

Highlights

  • Follow the classic Annapurna Circuit route through the Marsyangdi Valley to Manang
  • Dramatic mountain scenery as the landscape shifts from forested valleys to the high, dry Manang region
  • Chame’s mountain setting and the feeling of properly entering the high Himalaya corridor
  • Upper Pisang’s wide Himalayan views and traditional village atmosphere
  • A full acclimatization day in Manang with options for culture and short scenic outings
  • Cross Thorong La Pass (5,416m) – one of Nepal’s most legendary trekking milestones
  • Descend into the Mustang side and reach Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage destination
  • Take the quieter trail via Lupra Gompa for a rare cultural detour before Jomsom
  • Finish in Jomsom, the Kali Gandaki gateway town beneath Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri views on clear days
  • Scenic flights out via Pokhara (weather dependent, but often spectacular when skies are clear)

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m

Arrive in Nepal’s capital and transfer to your hotel. The day is kept gentle so you can settle in, rest, and ease into the rhythm of Kathmandu. If you arrive early, you can take a relaxed walk through nearby streets to get your first taste of the city’s culture and energy.

Day 2KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m

A flexible day for trip preparation and orientation. This is typically when you go through the trek briefing, final gear checks, and any last arrangements, so the mountain days feel smooth and stress-free. If you want to explore, Kathmandu’s heritage areas are an easy and rewarding way to start the journey culturally.

Day 3Drive to DharapaniOvernight: 1860 m

You leave the Kathmandu Valley and drive into the hills, following river corridors and terraced landscapes as the scenery gradually becomes more alpine. Dharapani is a key trail gateway where the trekking atmosphere begins to replace city life, with cooler air, mountain villages, and a sense of being properly in the Annapurna region.

Day 4Trek to ChameOvernight: 2670 m

The trail now follows established circuit paths through forested stretches and traditional settlements in the Marsyangdi corridor. As you gain altitude, the valley feels narrower and more dramatic, and the mountains begin to dominate the skyline more consistently. Chame is a major stop on the circuit, known for its high Himalayan setting and a strong sense that you have entered the heart of the trek.

Day 5Trek to Upper Pisang or Lower PisangOvernight: 3300 m

You continue deeper into the Manang side, with the environment transitioning toward a drier, more open mountain feel. Upper Pisang is a classic circuit village that sits above the valley and is valued for its wide views and quieter atmosphere compared to the lower settlements. This is one of those nights where the Himalayan scale starts to feel close and real.

Day 6Upper Pisang trek to ManangOvernight: 3540 m

The trail moves into the upper Manang Valley, where the landscape shifts noticeably into a rain-shadow character - wider horizons, thinner vegetation, and a crisp high-altitude feel. Arriving in Manang feels like reaching a mountain hub: a place to slow down, eat well, and prepare wisely for higher terrain ahead.

Day 7Explore ManangOvernight: 3540 m

A full day in Manang is one of the smartest and most enjoyable parts of the circuit. You can explore the village lanes, visit nearby cultural sites like Braga (Braka) Monastery, and take a gentle outing to places such as Gangapurna Lake for scenery and acclimatization support. It’s also a great day to simply rest, hydrate, and enjoy the high-mountain atmosphere before moving higher.

Day 8Manang trek to LetdarOvernight: 4200 m

Leaving Manang, the trail climbs into a more alpine corridor where trees thin out and the terrain becomes more exposed. The pace of the trek feels more serious now - the air is thinner, the views feel bigger, and the route naturally builds anticipation for the pass crossing ahead. Letdar is a quiet, high stop where the focus is on rest and steady acclimatization.

Day 9Letdar trek to Thorong Phedi (4450m) or High Camp (4833m)Overnight: 4832 m

The landscape becomes stark and high-mountain as you climb the Thorong corridor. Thorong Phedi is the main base area for the crossing, while High Camp is an optional higher stop depending on conditions and the guide’s assessment. Either way, the goal is a calm evening, warm food, and a well-prepared early start for Thorong La.

Day 10Cross Thorong La to MuktinathOvernight: 3800 m

This is the defining day of the Annapurna Circuit. You climb to Thorong La Pass, the trek’s highest point, then descend into a drier landscape that feels completely different from the Manang side. Reaching Muktinath is both a trekking milestone and a cultural one - it is a revered pilgrimage destination with deep meaning for both Hindu and Buddhist visitors.

Day 11Muktinath trek to Jomsom via Lupra GompaOvernight: 2720 m

Instead of taking the most direct line, you follow a quieter route via Lupra, a small village known for its Bon heritage and monastery traditions. This adds a rare cultural layer that many circuit trekkers miss, before you continue to Jomsom in the wide Kali Gandaki corridor. Jomsom feels like a clear finish point for the trekking journey - comfortable, open, and connected.

Day 12Jomsom flight to Pokhara, then onward to KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m

You take a short mountain flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, then continue to Kathmandu. These flights are weather dependent, which is why itineraries usually include flexibility, but when skies are clear the views can be outstanding. Returning to Kathmandu brings back city comfort and a chance to unwind properly.

Day 13KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m

A free day for rest, shopping, or cultural sightseeing. It also serves as a practical buffer for mountain flight logistics. Many guests enjoy a final celebratory dinner and relaxed time in the city before departure.

Day 14Depart

Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
