Overview

This itinerary is a more adventurous take on the Manaslu Circuit because it begins in the “hidden valley” side – the Gurung villages of Barpak and Laprak – before dropping down to join the main Budhi Gandaki trail. The first part feels culturally rich and scenic, with village life, ridge views, and a quieter trail atmosphere than the standard roadhead start. Once you connect to the Manaslu corridor, the trek follows the classic progression through Jagat, Deng, and Namrung into the high Nubri valley, where Tibetan Buddhist culture becomes more prominent through mani walls, chortens, and monasteries.

A special highlight is the overnight at Hinang Gompa Lodge, a peaceful monastery stay that adds depth beyond the usual teahouse villages. From Sama Gaun you include a dedicated day to visit Pungyen Gompa as an acclimatization hike before moving higher to Samdo and the Larkya Phedi high camp. The journey peaks with the Larkya La crossing and finishes with a dramatic descent to Bimthang and onward to Tal, then a comfortable return to Kathmandu.

Highlights

  • Begin with the quieter “hidden valley” approach via Barpak and Laprak, away from the usual Manaslu start points
  • Gurung village culture and ridge scenery in the Barpak and Laprak highlands
  • Join the classic Budhi Gandaki valley trail with suspension bridges, gorges, and waterfalls
  • Overnight at Hinang Gompa Lodge for a rare monastery stay and a peaceful mountain setting
  • Sama Gaun acclimatization with a dedicated hike to Pungyen Gompa
  • Samdo and the upper valley’s remote high-mountain atmosphere
  • Larkya Phedi (Dharamsala) high camp – the staging point for the main crossing
  • Cross Larkya La Pass (5,160m) – the signature Manaslu milestone
  • Bimthang’s alpine meadow basin after the pass – one of the most rewarding descents in Nepal
  • Finish at Tal, a dramatic river-valley village surrounded by cliffs and waterfalls

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m

Arrive in Kathmandu and we transfer you to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH). The day is kept light so you can rest, hydrate, and recover from travel. If you arrive early, you can do a short walk nearby and pick up any last essentials for the trek like snacks, a buff, and batteries. In the evening, we keep things calm so you start the trip feeling fresh and well-rested.

Day 2Kathmandu | Optional World Heritage SightseeingOvernight: 1350 m

This is your second day in Kathmandu, so it can be used for Optional World Heritage Sightseeing while still keeping time for trek preparation. You will have a detailed trek briefing, permit checks, and final gear organization for a route that goes from warm valleys to cold high passes. If you choose sightseeing, we keep it comfortable and efficient so you still have a relaxed evening. Getting good sleep tonight makes a big difference before the long drive tomorrow.

Day 3Drive to BarpakOvernight: 1920 m

You drive out of Kathmandu into the Gorkha hills toward Barpak, a famous highland village known for Gurung culture and mountain-facing ridges. The scenery shifts from city edges to terraced countryside and then into deeper rural hills as the road climbs. This is a travel-focused day, so we keep the pace smooth with comfort stops as needed. Arriving in Barpak feels like reaching the start of a quieter Nepal, far from the main trekking highways.

Day 4Trek to LaprakOvernight: 2200 m

Today begins the walking portion with classic village trails that link ridge settlements and hillside farmland. The route feels cultural and local, with traditional stone houses, terraced fields, and forest sections depending on the exact line used. Laprak is another beautiful Gurung village setting, and the day ends in a calmer atmosphere than the busier Manaslu corridor. It’s a good night to settle into trek rhythm and keep hydration strong.

Day 5Trek to Khorlabesi (long day)Overnight: 890 m

This is a longer day that transitions you from the highland villages down toward the Budhi Gandaki corridor. The scenery changes noticeably as you descend - cooler ridges give way to warmer valleys and more river-influenced terrain. Expect a steady pace and regular breaks, because long descents can be harder on the legs than climbs. Reaching Khorlabesi feels like “joining the circuit,” where the trail becomes more connected to the main Manaslu route.

Day 6Trek to JagatOvernight: 1339 m

You follow the Budhi Gandaki trail with suspension bridges, riverside paths, and small settlements that feel lively and local. The valley opens and closes in dramatic ways, and the route keeps you close to the river for much of the day. This is a great day to settle into consistent pacing without rushing, because the itinerary climbs steadily from here onward. Jagat is a key checkpoint village and a natural place to rest well before moving deeper into the restricted area zone.

Day 7Trek to Ekle BhattiOvernight: 1620 m

The trail continues upstream and the cultural atmosphere becomes more Himalayan, with mani walls and Buddhist markers becoming more common. You move through a mix of gorge sections and more open village areas, keeping the day varied and interesting. Ekle Bhatti is a quieter stopping point that positions you well for the next climb into higher villages. It’s a good evening to rest and keep things simple, because the trek begins to feel more remote from tomorrow.

Day 8Trek to DengOvernight: 1860 m

Today you push farther into the upper valley with a mix of forested paths, hillside sections, and frequent changes in valley shape. The air begins to feel cooler and the mountain character becomes stronger as you gain altitude. The route feels quieter overall as settlements become smaller and farther apart. Deng is a common overnight where many trekkers feel they have truly entered the deeper Manaslu trekking zone.

Day 9Trek to NamrungOvernight: 2630 m

The trail climbs steadily into higher country where forests thicken and the valley feels narrower and taller. Tibetan Buddhist trail features become more prominent, and the villages begin to look more Himalayan in architecture and daily rhythm. Namrung is an important gateway village and a turning point where the “high Himalaya section” starts to feel real. The evening is crisp and calm, perfect for recovery and acclimatization.

Day 10Trek to Hinang Gompa (Gompa Lodge)Overnight: 3120 m

Today you leave the main corridor for a special detour to Hinang Gompa, which adds a unique monastery stay to the journey. The walk feels more local and quiet, and the setting becomes increasingly peaceful as you approach the gompa area. Staying at the Gompa Lodge is a highlight because the atmosphere is calmer than standard teahouse villages and the mountain views can be outstanding in clear weather. This is also a great place to slow down and enjoy the spiritual side of the region before continuing deeper into Nubri valley.

Day 11Trek to LhoOvernight: 3180 m

You rejoin the main trail and continue through increasingly Tibetan-influenced village landscapes. The route often features mani walls, chortens, and the feeling of trekking through a living Buddhist mountain culture. Lho is known for its monastery presence and its dramatic setting in the upper valley. You usually arrive with time to relax, enjoy the crisp air, and settle into the higher altitude rhythm.

Day 12Trek to Sama GaunOvernight: 3520 m

Today takes you deeper into the Nubri valley toward Sama Gaun, the main settlement beneath Manaslu. The landscape becomes wider and more alpine, and the surrounding mountains feel closer and more dramatic. Sama Gaun is not just a stop - it’s a destination village where you can rest, acclimatize, and explore comfortably. The afternoon is ideal for a gentle walk and a relaxed evening to prepare for the higher days ahead.

Day 13Pungyen Gompa day hike (acclimatization)Overnight: 3520 m

This day is designed for acclimatization and cultural depth rather than moving lodges. You hike from Sama Gaun toward Pungyen Gompa, gaining altitude gradually and enjoying big mountain scenery in a quieter side valley. The gompa area is known for its peaceful setting and close Himalayan atmosphere, and the walk helps your body adapt safely. You return to Sama Gaun for another night, which supports better sleep and strength before heading to Samdo.

Day 14Trek to SamdoOvernight: 3880 m

You climb higher into a more open and rugged valley where vegetation thins and the air feels noticeably cooler. The trek feels quieter and more remote as settlements become fewer. Samdo is a high village with a true upper-valley feel and a calm rhythm compared to lower villages. This is a good night to keep things simple and rest well for the acclimatization hike tomorrow.

Day 15Samdo Ri day hikeOvernight: 3880 m

A day hike above Samdo helps you gain altitude safely before you commit to the high camp and pass day. The route climbs to the Samdo Ri viewpoint area, giving wide perspectives over the valley when skies are clear. This day is excellent for practicing steady pacing and breathing at altitude without moving to a higher overnight. You return to Samdo for a second night, which keeps the itinerary smart and well balanced.

Day 16Trek to Larkya PhediOvernight: 4460 m

Today you move toward the simple high camp used for the Larkya La crossing, often called Dharamsala or Larkya Phedi. The landscape becomes increasingly alpine and exposed, with fewer trees and more rugged terrain. Accommodation here is basic compared to lower villages, so the focus is on warmth, hydration, and an early night. This is the key staging stop for the trek’s biggest crossing.

Day 17Trek to Bimthang (cross Larkya La 5160m)Overnight: 3720 m

This is the defining day of the trek and it usually starts early. You climb to Larkya La and then descend into a completely different landscape of open alpine meadows and wider valleys. The transition is dramatic - high, cold pass terrain gives way to greener slopes and easier breathing as you drop. Bimthang is an ideal recovery stop after the crossing, with a rewarding sense of achievement.

Day 18Trek to GowaOvernight: 2510 m

You continue descending out of the high basin and the trek becomes noticeably warmer. Vegetation returns quickly as you drop into forested sections, and the trail feels more sheltered. This is typically a steadier walking day, but sustained downhill can still be tiring on the legs. Gowa is a practical overnight that keeps the descent comfortable and well paced.

Day 19Trek to TalOvernight: 1700 m

You descend further into greener valleys where local life becomes more present and the trail feels more connected. Tal is a dramatic river-valley village set beneath tall cliffs, often with waterfalls in the surrounding walls. The atmosphere here feels very different from the high pass zone, which makes it a satisfying “return to green” moment. It’s a great final trekking night to relax and reflect on the circuit

Day 20Drive to Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m

You drive back to Kathmandu, leaving the mountain valleys behind and returning to the city. The scenery shifts through hills and river corridors, and we take natural comfort stops depending on road conditions. After many days on the trail, city comfort feels like a real reward. We transfer you to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH) and keep the evening relaxed for a smooth finish.

Day 21Kathmandu | Optional World Heritage SightseeingOvernight: 1350 m

This is a free day in Kathmandu and it can be used for Optional World Heritage Sightseeing, shopping, or simply resting. It also works as a practical buffer day in case mountain or road logistics shift. Many guests use this time for a calm café day, souvenir shopping, and a final celebratory meal. Keeping the day unhurried makes departure day feel easy.

Day 22Depart | Transfer to TIA

We transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) for your onward flight home.
