Overview

This festival-specific trek is organized only around the exact dates of Mani Rimdu at Tengboche Monastery, the most famous monastery festival in the Khumbu. Mani Rimdu is a sequence of Tibetan Buddhist rituals and public masked dances (Cham) associated with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), bringing monks, Sherpa communities, and visitors together for blessings and celebration.

You follow the classic Everest trail from Lukla to Namche, take an acclimatization hike to the Everest View ridge, then trek to Phortse and reach Tengboche in time for multiple festival days. After the closing day, you descend back through Namche and return to Lukla, then fly back to Kathmandu. Because Lukla flight operations can shift seasonally, Day 2 can be used either as a Kathmandu day or as the drive to Manthali (Ramechhap) for an early morning Lukla flight.

Highlights

  • Attend Mani Rimdu at Tengboche Monastery across multiple festival days
  • Watch sacred Cham masked dances, ritual ceremonies, and festival blessings
  • Tengboche’s dramatic monastery setting with Ama Dablam often forming the iconic backdrop on clear days
  • A well-paced route with acclimatization built in before the festival days
  • Everest View ridge hike for classic high Himalayan panoramas above Namche
  • Phortse village stop for a quieter, more traditional side of the Khumbu
  • Classic Khumbu trail scenery – suspension bridges, rivers, pine and rhododendron forests
  • Festival-specific departures timed to the exact dates (set by the Tibetan lunar calendar, dates vary by year)
  • Buffer time in Kathmandu to keep the end of the trip smooth

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m

Arrive in Kathmandu and we transfer you to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH). The day is kept light so you can rest, hydrate, and recover from travel. If you arrive early, you can take a short walk nearby, exchange money, and pick up any last essentials for the trek. In the evening, we keep things calm and go over the plan for the festival-timed trek.

Day 2Kathmandu | Optional World Heritage Sightseeing, or drive to Manthali (Ramechhap) for the early Lukla flightOvernight: 1350 m

This day is designed to be flexible, because Lukla flight operations sometimes run from Manthali (Ramechhap) in peak season. If flights are operating from Kathmandu, you can use the day for a briefing, final gear checks, and Optional World Heritage Sightseeing at a relaxed pace. If flights are operating from Manthali, we drive there to position for the early flight, keeping the day practical and well-timed. Either way, the goal is the same - a smooth start and a well-rested body before flying into the mountains.

Day 3Trek to MonjoOvernight: 2850 m

You fly to Lukla and begin trekking along the Dudh Koshi valley on a classic Everest trail with suspension bridges, riverside forests, and small Sherpa settlements. The first trekking day is intentionally gentle so you can settle into the altitude without rushing. As you move up-valley, the scenery feels increasingly Himalayan and the trekking rhythm becomes clear. Monjo is a comfortable stop near the Sagarmatha National Park entrance area, making it a natural first overnight.

Day 4Trek to Namche BazaarOvernight: 3440 m

Today you enter Sagarmatha National Park and follow the river upstream through bridges and forest sections as the valley narrows. The final climb into Namche is one of the trek’s signature moments, with the town appearing across the hillside in an amphitheatre shape. After arrival, you have time to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the lively Sherpa hub atmosphere. This is also a key acclimatization base, so we keep the afternoon light and practical.

Day 5Acclimatization hike to Everest View Hotel ridgeOvernight: 3340 m

A classic acclimatization day where you hike higher for views and then return to sleep lower. The Everest View ridge walk is designed to help your body adapt while also delivering big Himalayan panoramas on clear days. The pace is steady and unhurried, with plenty of time for photos and short breaks. Back in Namche, you can enjoy a comfortable evening, good food, and proper rest before moving toward the quieter side routes.

Day 6Trek to PhortseOvernight: 3840 m

You leave the main corridor and head toward Phortse, which gives a calmer, more local feel compared to the busier EBC highway. The day includes scenic trail sections and a strong sense of Sherpa village life as you move into a quieter valley. This stage also helps you step up gradually in altitude without rushing into the festival zone too quickly. After arrival, the evening is perfect for rest, hydration, and settling into the higher village rhythm before Tengboche.

Day 7Trek to Tengboche (Mani Rimdu Festival day)Overnight: 3850 m

Today you reach Tengboche, home to the region’s most famous monastery festival setting. The approach feels special because the monastery sits in a dramatic location, and during Mani Rimdu the area becomes alive with monks, locals, and festival energy. Depending on the exact schedule for the year, you may witness opening-day ceremonies and community activity around the monastery. We keep the afternoon flexible so you can follow the meaningful parts of the festival program without rushing.

Day 8Tengboche (Mani Rimdu Festival day - Lama dance)Overnight: 3850 m

A full day in Tengboche dedicated to Mani Rimdu, timed to match the key public festival days. The highlight is typically the masked Cham dances and ritual performances, which are deeply symbolic and tied to Tibetan Buddhist teachings and protection blessings. You have time to watch respectfully, take breaks when needed, and enjoy the atmosphere without fatigue. Another night at the same altitude also supports acclimatization and makes the experience feel immersive rather than rushed.

Day 9Tengboche (Mani Rimdu Festival closing day - Jiksak)Overnight: 3850 m

This day is focused on the closing ceremonies, which many festival descriptions link with purification rituals and final blessings for the community. The program can vary slightly by year, so we keep the day flexible to follow the most important moments as they happen. It’s a powerful cultural day because you feel the monastery courtyard energy at its peak, then gently quieting as the festival completes. In the evening, you rest well and prepare for the descent the next day.

Day 10Trek to NamcheOvernight: 3440 m

You descend from Tengboche back toward Namche, with forests returning and the air feeling noticeably richer as you lose altitude. The trail becomes more comfortable on breathing, and the return perspective makes familiar viewpoints feel new. Back in Namche, you can enjoy a relaxed evening with good food and the lively mountain-town atmosphere. This is also a good time to do small souvenir shopping or simply rest after the festival days.

Day 11Trek to LuklaOvernight: 2835 m

Your final full trekking day follows the classic return route down the Dudh Koshi corridor. The trail feels more connected and active as you approach Lukla, and you’ll notice the landscape becoming greener and warmer. Arriving in Lukla is the traditional end-of-trek moment, and it’s a great evening for a calm celebration and early rest. Because flights are weather dependent, we keep the night practical and well-prepared.

Day 12Flight to Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m

You fly out from Lukla, with the arrival point depending on flight operations. If flights are routed via Manthali, you land there and then drive back to Kathmandu, keeping the return organized and smooth. Once in Kathmandu, we transfer you back to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH) for a comfortable evening. This is a perfect night for a long shower, a good meal, and relaxed packing.

Day 13KathmanduOvernight: 1349 m

A free day in Kathmandu at KGH to rest, shop, or do optional sightseeing if you want. This day also works as an important buffer because Lukla flights can be delayed by weather, and having an extra day protects your international departure. Keep the pace easy with café time, souvenir browsing, and a final celebratory dinner. We keep the schedule unhurried so departure day feels smooth.

Day 14Depart | Transfer to TIA

We transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) for your onward flight home.
