Overview

This is a festival-specific trek scheduled around the exact dates of Mani Rimdu at Thame Monastery, one of the most meaningful Buddhist celebrations in the Khumbu. Mani Rimdu is a series of Tibetan Buddhist rituals and masked dances (Cham) associated with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) and is performed in Khumbu monasteries including Tengboche, Thame, and Chiwong.

You fly to Lukla and trek the classic Dudh Koshi valley route to Namche, then continue into the quieter Thame valley to witness multiple festival days at the monastery. Tengboche is often described as the largest Mani Rimdu gathering in the region, so Thame typically feels more local and less crowded while still delivering the full spiritual atmosphere. (That “quieter” character is a practical inference based on Tengboche being the most vibrant.)

Note on timing – Mani Rimdu dates change each year because they are set by the Tibetan lunar calendar, usually falling in October to November.

Highlights

  • Attend Mani Rimdu at Thame Monastery across multiple festival days
  • Watch sacred masked Cham dances and ritual ceremonies performed by monks
  • Experience a festival whose dates are fixed by the Tibetan lunar calendar
  • Classic Khumbu trail scenery – suspension bridges, riverside forests, and Sherpa villages
  • Namche Bazaar (3,440m) – the Sherpa hub of the Everest region
  • Thame valley (3,800m) – a quieter cultural side valley from Namche
  • Visit Khunde (3,840m) in the Khumjung valley, known for the hospital founded by Sir Edmund Hillary
  • Comfortable pacing with built-in cultural days rather than rushing through villages
  • A smooth finish with a buffer day in Kathmandu before departure

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m

Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH). The day is kept light so you can rest, hydrate, and recover from travel. If you arrive early, you can take a short walk nearby, exchange money, and pick up any last essentials. In the evening, we keep things calm and go over the next days at a relaxed pace.

Day 2Kathmandu | Optional World Heritage SightseeingOvernight: 1350 m

This is your second Kathmandu day, so it can be used for Optional World Heritage Sightseeing while still keeping time for trek preparation. We use the day for a briefing, final gear checks, and confirming flight logistics for Lukla. In peak trekking seasons, flights may operate from Manthali (Ramechhap) instead of Kathmandu, so this day can also be used for the drive to Manthali if required.

We keep the evening flexible so you can rest well before the early start on Day 3.

Day 3Flight to Lukla, trek to MonjoOvernight: 2850 m

You fly into Lukla and begin trekking along the Dudh Koshi valley on a lively trail with suspension bridges, riverside forests, and small Sherpa settlements. The first day is designed to feel gentle, letting your body settle into the altitude without rushing. Monjo is a classic stopping point near the Sagarmatha National Park entrance area and is widely listed at 2,835m.

You arrive with time to relax and enjoy your first quiet evening in the Khumbu.

Day 4Trek to NamcheOvernight: 3440 m

Today you enter Sagarmatha National Park and follow the river upstream through bridges and forest sections as the valley narrows. The final climb into Namche is one of the trek’s signature moments, with the town appearing across the hillside in an amphitheatre shape. Namche Bazaar is commonly cited around 3,440m and is the ideal acclimatization base for the Khumbu.

After arrival, we keep the afternoon light, focusing on rest, warm food, and hydration.

Day 5Trek to Thame (Mani Rimdu Festival day)Overnight: 3800 m

You leave the main Everest corridor and head into the quieter Thame valley, where the atmosphere becomes calmer and more traditional. Thame is a Sherpa village at about 3,800m and is known for its important monastery and cultural heritage.

Arriving on a festival day means the village feels especially alive, with locals gathering and preparations around the monastery. Depending on the year’s program, you may witness opening ceremonies, prayers, and community activity connected to Mani Rimdu. Mani Rimdu is performed in Khumbu monasteries including Thame.

Day 6Thame (Mani Rimdu Festival day)Overnight: 3800 m

A full festival day in Thame so you can experience Mani Rimdu properly rather than just passing through. Mani Rimdu includes Tibetan Buddhist rituals and masked Cham dances that symbolically depict the triumph of compassion over negative forces.

You spend the day moving between monastery events and quiet breaks, keeping your energy steady at altitude. This is also a great day to observe local Sherpa culture in a setting that typically feels more intimate than the larger Tengboche gathering. (This is inferred from Tengboche being described as the biggest and most vibrant.)

Another night in Thame keeps acclimatization strong and the experience immersive.

Day 7Thame (Mani Rimdu Festival closing day)Overnight: 3800 m

This is the final festival day in your itinerary, focused on the concluding ceremonies and blessings. Mani Rimdu is structured as a sequence of rituals and performances, and many descriptions highlight that different days emphasize prayers, dances, and closing rites.

You have time to take in the atmosphere, photograph respectfully where allowed, and enjoy the sense of community around the monastery. The day is kept flexible so you can follow the most meaningful parts of the program without rushing. You rest well in the evening, preparing to continue trekking the next day.

Day 8Trek to KhundeOvernight: 3840 m

You trek out of the Thame valley and move toward the Khumjung valley side, where the landscape opens into a broad high settlement area above Namche. Khunde sits at about 3,840m and is known for the hospital founded by Sir Edmund Hillary, giving the village a unique place in Khumbu history.

The day feels culturally rich and scenic, with classic Sherpa village life and mountain backdrops. After arrival, we keep the afternoon relaxed, focusing on recovery and enjoying the quieter village atmosphere.

Day 9Trek to PhakdingOvernight: 2650 m

You descend steadily back toward the lower Dudh Koshi valley, and the air begins to feel noticeably richer as you drop. The trail passes familiar bridges and villages that now feel like old friends after your time in the high valleys. Phakding is widely cited at 2,610m and is a comfortable place to sleep lower after the festival altitude.

This is a good evening for a warm meal, rest, and a calm pace before the final Lukla days.

Day 10Trek to LuklaOvernight: 2860 m

Your final trekking day follows the classic return route down the valley with a steady, familiar rhythm. The trail feels more connected and active as you approach Lukla, with more trekkers and local traffic near the airstrip area. Lukla is commonly cited around 2,860m, and arriving here marks the end of your trekking portion.

An early night is recommended because flights often operate early and weather can be time-sensitive.

Day 11Flight to Kathmandu or Manthali (Ramechhap)Overnight: 1350 m

You fly out from Lukla, with the arrival point depending on the season and flight operations. In peak seasons, Lukla flights commonly operate via Manthali (Ramechhap) to reduce congestion in Kathmandu, which means a flight to Manthali followed by a drive to Kathmandu.

If conditions allow a direct Kathmandu sector, you fly straight back to the capital. Either way, we plan the day to be flexible and keep the return smooth.

Day 12KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m

A free day in Kathmandu at KGH to rest, shop, or do optional sightseeing. This day is also useful as a buffer because Lukla flights can be delayed by weather, and having an extra city day protects your international departure. You can use the time for a relaxed café day, a final celebratory dinner, and calm packing. We keep the schedule unhurried so the trip ends smoothly.

Day 13Depart | Transfer to TIA

We transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) for your onward flight home.
