Overview
The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is a true expedition-style lodge trek that completes a full traverse of the Kanchenjunga region by linking the South Base Camp (Yalung) and the North Base Camp (Pang Pema) in one continuous journey. You begin with Kathmandu logistics and preparation, then fly to Bhadrapur and travel into the tea hill country of Ilam before driving to the trek entry point near Yambukhola. From there, the trail climbs steadily through traditional Limbu and Rai villages to Yamphudin, then into a higher alpine world toward Tortong, Cheram, and Ramche, setting up your South Base Camp day to Yalung.
After returning to Cheram, you cross the Sele La area to reach Ghunsa, the key high village hub in the north. From Ghunsa, the landscape turns increasingly rugged and glacial as you progress to Kambachen and Lhonak, with a dedicated acclimatization day before your day trip to Pang Pema (Kanchenjunga North Base Camp). You then descend through the northern valleys and drive out via Taplejung, returning to Kathmandu with buffer time before departure. This is a lodge trek, but it is a remote region – we choose the best available lodges and teahouses at each stop, while keeping expectations realistic for facilities.
Highlights
- Fly to Bhadrapur and travel through Ilam’s tea hill landscapes before entering the mountains
- A true off-the-beaten-path trek with far fewer trekkers than Nepal’s classic regions
- Cultural variety – lower villages often reflect Limbu and Rai communities, then higher valleys feel more Tibetan-influenced
- South Base Camp side – Cheram, Ramche, and the day trip to Yalung Base Camp
- The dramatic Sele La crossing zone linking the south to the north side of the region
- Ghunsa – the major high village hub on Kanchenjunga routes
- High alpine progression through Kambachen and Lhonak
- Pang Pema day trip – Kanchenjunga North Base Camp experience
- Well-paced acclimatization with rest days in Cheram and Kambachen

Itinerary
Day 1Arrive in Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m
Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH). The day is kept light so you can rest, hydrate, and recover from travel. If you arrive early, you can do a short walk nearby and pick up any last essentials for a remote trek. In the evening, we keep things calm and focus on good sleep before the travel days begin.
Day 2Kathmandu | Optional World Heritage SightseeingOvernight: 1350 m
This day can be used for a trek briefing, final packing, and checking anything you may need for a long remote-region itinerary. If you want, it also works perfectly as an Optional World Heritage Sightseeing day, since you still have time and energy before the long travel stage begins. It is also a useful buffer in case domestic logistics need adjusting. A relaxed evening helps set you up well for the flight and drive tomorrow.
Day 3Fly to Bhadrapur, continue to IlamOvernight: 1226 m
You fly to Bhadrapur in the lowlands of eastern Nepal, then travel onward toward Ilam in the cooler hill country. The scenery changes quickly from plains into green ridges, terraced slopes, and tea-growing landscapes. This is a travel-heavy day, so the main focus is arriving comfortably and resting well. Ilam is a good staging point before you drive deeper into Taplejung district and the trekking corridor.
Day 4Drive to YambukholaOvernight: 1499 m
Today you drive deeper into eastern Nepal toward the Kanchenjunga trail approach, gradually leaving the more settled hill towns behind. The road becomes more remote as you enter Taplejung district and approach the valleys that feed into the Kanchenjunga region. This is the day where permit checks and documentation can become important, so it is good to keep those ready. You arrive in the Yambukhola area, a practical starting point for the first trekking days.
Day 5Trek to KhebangOvernight: 1915 m
The trek begins with village paths and hillside trails that feel distinctly eastern Nepal, often passing terraced fields and smaller settlements. The lower section of the Kanchenjunga region has a warmer, greener atmosphere compared to the high alpine days later on. This is a good day to settle into your walking rhythm and keep your pacing relaxed. Khebang is a comfortable first major stop and an important step toward Yamphudin.
Day 6Trek to YamphudinOvernight: 2080 m
Today you continue deeper into the trekking corridor toward Yamphudin, often considered one of the key gateway villages for the Kanchenjunga south side. The day typically includes mixed terrain - village trails, forest sections, and small river crossings depending on the exact route used. Yamphudin feels like a significant staging point because after this the trek begins to climb more seriously into higher alpine landscapes. You usually arrive with time to rest, reorganize, and prepare for the steeper mountain days ahead.
Day 7Trek to TortongOvernight: 2990 m
The scenery begins to shift as you climb away from the lower villages and into denser forest and higher ridge terrain. Trails often feel quieter here, with fewer settlements and a more remote atmosphere. You will notice cooler air and changing vegetation as you gain altitude. Tortong is a common stop used to position well for the climb to Cheram and the higher alpine zone.
Day 8Trek to CheramOvernight: 3870 m
Today you push into higher country and the landscape becomes more alpine and open. The trail often feels more rugged, and you start getting a stronger sense of the high mountain environment that defines the Kanchenjunga region. Cheram is a key settlement for the south side and is used as a base for acclimatization and for positioning toward Ramche and Yalung Base Camp. After arrival, it is best to keep the afternoon calm and focus on recovery and hydration.
Day 9Rest day in CheramOvernight: 3870 m
A rest and acclimatization day here is one of the best decisions for comfort and safety. You can use the time for gentle exploration, short local walks, and letting your body adapt to the altitude. It also gives space to enjoy the setting instead of rushing through it, which matters in remote regions where weather can change quickly. A second night at the same altitude often improves sleep and appetite before the higher push tomorrow.
Day 10Trek to RamcheOvernight: 4500 m
You climb higher into a more rugged, alpine landscape as you move toward Ramche. This day feels like a true high mountain progression - thinner air, more dramatic valley walls, and fewer signs of settled life. Ramche is typically used as a staging point for the Yalung Base Camp day, so arriving here positions you well. The evening is kept simple with warm food, rest, and preparation for the major day hike tomorrow.
Day 11Yalung Base Camp day trip, return to CheramOvernight: 3870 m
This is a signature day on the south side of the Kanchenjunga circuit. You hike to Yalung Base Camp and experience the high, glacial environment beneath Kanchenjunga’s south face, then return to Cheram for the night. Returning to Cheram is helpful because it brings you to a slightly lower sleeping altitude after the higher base camp day. The day is demanding but deeply rewarding, and it often becomes one of the trip’s defining memories.
Day 12Trek to Sele LaOvernight: 4200 m
Today begins the transition between the south and north sides of the circuit. The terrain often feels wild and high, with fewer settlements and a stronger sense of remoteness as you move toward the pass area. This stage is all about steady pacing and good layering, since conditions can feel colder and more exposed. Sele La is commonly used as an overnight to position for the crossing and the descent toward Ghunsa.
Day 13Trek to GhunsaOvernight: 3400 m
You descend from the Sele La area into a different cultural and landscape zone as you approach Ghunsa. Ghunsa is the major village hub on the north side of Kanchenjunga routes and is a key place for rest, supplies, and regrouping. The village atmosphere is often more Tibetan-influenced in feel compared to the lower eastern hill villages. After arrival, you usually feel a strong sense of accomplishment because you have linked the south side to the north side of the region.
Day 14Trek to KambachenOvernight: 4050 m
From Ghunsa you move into higher, more rugged terrain with a stronger alpine character. The trail typically follows the upper valley as vegetation thins and the environment feels colder and more exposed. This is a good day to focus on steady breathing and consistent pacing rather than speed. Kambachen is a key acclimatization stop before heading higher toward Lhonak and Pang Pema.
Day 15Rest day in KambachenOvernight: 4050 m
A rest and acclimatization day here helps you adapt safely before going higher into the Lhonak valley. You can use the day for gentle exploration, short walks, and letting your body absorb the altitude, which usually improves sleep and recovery. In remote high villages, a rest day also provides flexibility for weather and trail conditions. Keeping the day calm and well-hydrated makes the next stages far more enjoyable.
Day 16Trek to LhonakOvernight: 4780 m
You climb into very high, remote terrain as you approach Lhonak, one of the last settlements before Pang Pema. The landscape here feels stark and glacial, with a true expedition atmosphere compared to earlier village days. Because the altitude is high, it is important to keep the pace slow and steady. After arrival, the priority is rest and preparation for the base camp day.
Day 17Pang Pema day trip, return to LhonakOvernight: 4780 m
This is the signature day for the north side of Kanchenjunga. You hike to Pang Pema (Kanchenjunga North Base Camp), experience the high base camp environment, then return to Lhonak for the night. Returning to the same lodge keeps the day logistically smooth and avoids an even higher overnight. This day often feels like the “summit experience” of the entire circuit trek.
Day 18 Trek to GhunsaOvernight: 3400 m
You begin descending from the highest valley back toward Ghunsa. With each step down the air becomes easier and the landscape gradually feels less stark, though the mountain scale remains impressive. This is a long return day, but it often feels satisfying because you are clearly transitioning out of the highest zone. Back in Ghunsa, the comfort level generally improves and the village atmosphere feels lively again.
Day 19Trek to KyapraOvernight: 2729 m
Continuing down-valley, the trek becomes greener and more sheltered. You pass through route sections that now feel familiar, with a different perspective as you descend. This is usually a steady day focused on comfortable progress rather than big altitude gain. Kyapra is a practical overnight that breaks up the return journey nicely.
Day 20Trek to AmjilosaOvernight: 2300 m
The descent continues through forested valley trails with warmer air and thicker vegetation returning. The village-to-village feel becomes stronger again as you approach lower settlements. This is also where appetite and energy often return more strongly due to the drop in altitude. Amjilosa is a comfortable stop that keeps the return route well paced.
Day 21Trek to Sekathum, drive to TaplejungOvernight: 1820 m
You complete the final trekking section back to Sekathum, then transition to road travel toward Taplejung. The switch from trail to vehicle feels like a clear closing chapter to the trekking portion, even though the journey continues through the hills. Because roads here are remote, we focus on safety, comfort, and realistic timing. Taplejung is a key district town and a natural staging point for travel back toward Ilam and flights.
Day 22Drive to IlamOvernight: 1226 m
You drive back toward Ilam through eastern hill landscapes, passing rural settlements and long ridgelines. After many days in remote lodges, Ilam usually feels more comfortable and settled. This is a good day to recover, organize gear, and enjoy a slower pace again. A calm evening here helps the flight day feel smooth.
Day 23Drive Bhadrapur, Flight to Kathmandu | Transfer to KGHOvernight: 1350 m
You travel to Bhadrapur and fly back to Kathmandu, then transfer to Kathmandu Guest House (KGH). After the remoteness of the Kanchenjunga region, returning to city comfort is a real reward. This is a great evening for a long shower, a celebratory dinner, and proper rest. It is also the best time to start packing calmly for your onward travel.
Day 24Kathmandu | Optional World Heritage SightseeingOvernight: 1350 m
A full free day in Kathmandu that can be used for Optional World Heritage Sightseeing if you want to finish the trip with culture and history. It also works as a buffer day in case domestic travel days shift. Many travelers use this time for souvenirs, relaxed café stops, and a final celebratory meal. Keeping the day unhurried makes departure day feel easy.
Day 25 Depart
Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) for your onward flight home. If your flight is later in the day, you can still enjoy a calm breakfast and final moments in Kathmandu before the airport run.
