Overview

This Everest Base Camp trek follows the iconic Khumbu trail from Lukla through Sherpa villages and high Himalayan valleys to reach Everest Base Camp and the famous viewpoint of Kala Patthar. Along the way you acclimatize properly in Namche Bazaar, then take a quieter cultural route via Phortse before continuing higher to Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep on the edge of the Khumbu Glacier.

A key strength of this itinerary is its pacing and acclimatization – you include a day hike to the Everest View Hotel ridge above Namche, plus a second acclimatization outing from Dingboche to Chhukhung before moving into the higher, more glacial terrain near base camp. After visiting Everest Base Camp and climbing Kala Patthar, you descend via Pangboche and return to Lukla for the flight back to Kathmandu.

Highlights

  • Scenic flight to Lukla and a true “start of trek” atmosphere from day one
  • Classic Khumbu trail experience – river valleys, suspension bridges, and Sherpa villages
  • Namche Bazaar – the Sherpa hub of the region and the perfect acclimatization base
  • Acclimatization hike to the Everest View Hotel ridge for early panoramic Himalaya views
  • Quieter cultural route via Phortse, away from the busiest main trail
  • Dingboche acclimatization base in the upper valley
  • Everest Base Camp visit – standing at the foot of Everest’s South Base Camp
  • Kala Patthar sunrise viewpoint – the most famous close-up vantage in the trekking region
  • Dramatic glacial landscapes around Lobuche and Gorak Shep
  • Descent via Pangboche with strong Sherpa heritage and monastery culture

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m

Arrive in Nepal’s capital and transfer to your hotel. The day is kept light so you can rest, hydrate, and settle in comfortably before the mountain journey begins.
If you arrive early, a relaxed walk and a calm dinner sets you up well for the days ahead.

Day 2Kathmandu, or drive to Manthali (Ramechhap) for the early Lukla flightOvernight: 1350 m

This day stays flexible depending on Lukla flight operations. If flights are running from Kathmandu, use the day for a briefing, final gear checks, and a low-stress evening.
If flights are routed via Manthali, you drive out of the valley and position for an early departure the next morning.

Day 3Flight to Lukla, trek to MonjoOvernight: 2835 m

After the mountain flight into Lukla, you begin on a well-established trail that follows the Dudh Koshi valley through small settlements and forested riverside paths. It’s a beautiful first trekking day with constant local movement and classic Everest-region trail energy.
Monjo is a traditional stopping point just below the national park entrance area, ideal for easing into altitude.

Day 4Trek to Namche BazaarOvernight: 3440 m

You enter Sagarmatha National Park and follow the river upstream, crossing suspension bridges as the valley tightens and the mountains begin to feel closer.
The final climb brings you into Namche’s amphitheatre-shaped hillside setting, a true milestone moment on the Everest trail.

Day 5 Acclimatization hike to Everest View Hotel ridgeOvernight: 3440 m

A classic acclimatization day that takes you above Namche to gain height safely and return to sleep lower. The route is known for early panoramic views on clear days.
The Everest View Hotel ridge is commonly referenced around 3,880m and is a famous viewpoint area for the region.

Day 6Trek to PhortseOvernight: 3840 m

You leave the busier main EBC corridor and take a quieter route that feels more local and traditional. The trail has a calmer rhythm, and Phortse is widely noted as a more “off-the-main-trail” Sherpa village experience.
It’s a great day for culture, wide valley perspectives, and a more peaceful overnight than the main highway villages.

Day 7Trek to DingbocheOvernight: 4410 m

Today you continue into higher terrain where the landscape becomes more open and alpine. You feel the shift toward true high-Himalaya trekking - thinner air, wider horizons, and a stronger mountain presence.
Dingboche is a key settlement in the upper Khumbu and a common acclimatization base before pushing higher.

Day 8Acclimatization hike to ChhukhungOvernight: 4410 m

A valuable acclimatization outing into the Chhukhung valley, giving you a closer look at glaciated terrain and big Himalayan walls without committing to a higher overnight.
You return to Dingboche for a second night, which helps you feel stronger and more comfortable for the next big altitude steps.

Day 9Trek to LobucheOvernight: 4940 m

The landscape becomes starker and more rugged as you move higher toward the Khumbu Glacier corridor. This section feels more “expedition-like” with rock, moraine, and high-altitude air dominating the experience.
Lobuche is one of the last major lodge stops before Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp

Day 10Trek to Gorak Shep, visit Everest Base CampOvernight: 5164 m

You trek along glacial moraines to Gorak Shep, a high outpost beside the Khumbu Glacier and the typical base for EBC day visits.
After settling in, you continue to Everest Base Camp to stand at the famous South Base Camp area, then return to Gorak Shep for the night.

Day 11Kala Patthar hike, trek to LobucheOvernight: 4940 m

An early start for Kala Patthar, the most famous trekking viewpoint for close-up Everest-region panoramas.
After the viewpoint, you descend back down for a better night’s rest and return to Lobuche.

Day 12Trek to PangbocheOvernight: 3985 m

You descend into a warmer-feeling valley environment, with more shelter and a noticeable increase in comfort as oxygen returns.
Pangboche is a well-known Sherpa village on the route, commonly cited at 3,985m, and is strongly associated with monastery culture and the Ama Dablam backdrop on clear days.

Day 13Trek to Namche BazaarOvernight: 3440 m

A longer descent day that gradually brings you back toward the busy heart of the Khumbu. Trails feel livelier again, and the return to Namche brings back the comforts of cafés, bakeries, and a more social trekking atmosphere.
It’s also a satisfying psychological milestone - you can feel the trek turning toward home.

Day 14Trek to LuklaOvernight: 2860 m

You follow the Dudh Koshi corridor back down through familiar bridges and villages, with greener landscapes returning as you lose altitude.
Arriving in Lukla is the classic end-of-trek moment - time to celebrate, relax, and prepare for the flight out.

Day 15Flight to KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m

Fly back to Kathmandu (direct or via Manthali depending on operations) and transfer to your hotel.
A hot shower, great food, and a slow evening in the city feels like the perfect reward after the high mountains.

Day 16KathmanduOvernight: 1350 m

A free day for rest, souvenir shopping, or optional sightseeing. It also acts as a practical buffer in case Lukla flights were delayed by mountain weather.
Keep it relaxed and enjoy a final easy day before departure.

Day 17Depart

Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
