| Sherpa village Treks
No need to trek all the way to Everest Base Camp to visit the Khumbu Valley and experience the unique Sherpa culture! We offer several shorter, lower altitude treks in the Everest region which provide fantastic views along the lovely trekking routes and allow you to visit Sherpa homes en route. Starting in Lukla, with its famous Hillary Airport, we trek through a patchwork of traditional villages to reach busting Namche Bazaar. Thame Valley, much loved by frequent Khumbu visitors as a little-known refuge of serenity and natural beauty, is a wonderful trek in itself and a look into the life of the Sherpas.. The village is home to some of the Himalaya's most renowned mountaineers such as Appa Sherpa and Ang Rita Sherpa, also known as the Snow Leopard. Our trekking route along the western valley of Namche Bazaar follows the ancient trade route north to Tibet, still plied by trans-Himalayan traders. Fir and Rhododendron forests harbor the rainbow-colored Daphne pheasant, Nepal's national bird, while Himalayan Tahr graze undisturbed in the hills. Thame, a lovely, walled village famous for its delicious potatoes, has much to offer. Spend the evening or morning visiting scenic Thame Gompa (monastery), perched in the rocky hillside above Thame, one of the three oldest gompas in all of the Everest region. You'll then visit the village of Khumjung, along with Thame one of the oldest villages in the Everest region (see Yeti Scalp in Khumjung Gompa). Khumjung is home to several Sherpa artists, and the views of Ama Dablam, Everest, Lhotse and other spectacular peaks are sublime. We also stay in the traditional Phortse village visit the famous Tengboche Gompa, backed by the world's highest peak, know locally as Chomolungma (Everest), and stay in the lively village of Pangboche, perched on a hillside with the majestic Ama Dablam rising in back. |
